A Growing concern - Page 2

Keep in mind that while dual core is on its way, for gaming's sake it won't be helping. Also you want P-M dual core which wouldn't come out until early next year and even if so, it would be almost double the current price.

And 64-bit computing -- it won't be main stream until Longhorn is out and even so it'd still be quite a while for the drivers to catch up. At least mid next year I suspect, maybe a little later.

Bottom line: If you can wait till mid-2006 for a laptop, then feel free to wait. If you need a gaming laptop now, dual core / 64-bit isn't a concern.

It will be at least a year or so before 64bit becomes main stream. Granted I am running Windows professional x64 right now!!!! Let me tell you this much. 64 bit windows on a 64 bit cpu is absolutely amazing. SUPER FAST! But on the other hand companys are not going to suddenly drop 32 bit apps and only make 64 bit apps. So no matter what you will have at least 4 good years out of your new laptop.

The LCD screen is not bad at all. I just recently got mines and when i first started up there seems to be light leakage from the bottom part of the screen. Minor light leakage though, at first i was dissappointed only a bit but when the the screen its not black its barely noticable. Not only that after using it only for a week the light leakage went away. Now I have a kick ass screen with no dead pixels and no light leakage.... so NO the screen is not Horrible one bit, its actually luvly

I went to the AMD Tech Tour where they had both Microsoft and AMD people talk about 64-bit being around the corner. Yes longhorn will also have a 32 bit version but the primary focus is 64 bit. It was interesting to see how much more efficient AMD's dual core chips are compared to Intels.

The screen issues have been way overblown. I have the LG screen. It has no sparkles. Light leakage that I noticed when new, dissappeared with time. Don't worry about the screen. I read this forum, and I almost did not order a computer. I am glad that I went ahead and took the plunge. Get the XPS. You will enjoy it.

I agree. I bought a middle-to-upper range desktop 4 years ago and it's still running perfect. 2.4gHz, 512mb ram, geforce ti4600, newer 160gb Seagate harddrive. . .in fact, I just decided to sell it for a pretty good price because my laptop seems to 'inch it out' in ever category! I'm not looking forward to getting rid of it--but, I am looking foward to having a 60 pound (dual monitors), 2'x5' mass removed from the other room.

word, i've had my xps gen 2 for about 2 weeks or so, I had a 9300 for about a month or so, I loved it also. As everybody else said, waiting for the best, you'll wait your entire life, get something that will meet your needs, plus a little bit, and it'll last you a few years, prolly about 2 years on the Gen 2 and then at that point youll have to run games at medium, no biggy.

I love my Gen2, I sold my gaming desktop for it, this thing sits on the desk at all times, but its not big and bulky which is why I went away from desktops .

However, I do remember when 512mb ram was like having 2gigs, almost unheard of, but it seems that 2 gigs is becoming the standard now, as 512 was almost the standard back in the day.
