Another Windows help!! I am so screwed...

Hi guys.....it's Angela here...and the problem is not w/ my 7700, but I feel more comfortable posting in the AW family...and I need serious HELP!

Last nite, I tried to hookup my boyfriend's IBM laptop (from work) to our workgroup at home so I can transfer the files from his laptop but couldn't seem to get it to work. He has Win2000 Professional on the laptop, at the last desparate attempt, I went into System Properties -> Netweork Idenfitifications -> Properties and added workgroup name to his laptop. By doing so, the radio button for the domain becamse un-highlighted.

Then the system prompt me to restart, when the computer restart at Logon, it won't let him get on again with the username/password he has. He gets the message that the User-name, Domain, or Password is incorrect.

Is there a way to fix this?!? or somehow bypass the logon screen?!?

And no, we coudln't login as Administrator, since the company IT dept is the one that has the password. That may be the last resort, but I want to know if there's a way around it before he has to send it to IT.

I feel sooo bad that I screwed it up...he has a lot of work related stuff on it..

thanks

angela

It sounds like you're going to HAVE to go to the administrator. Basically, it sounds like your boyfriend had to logon to his computer through his company's network, but since you changed the workgroup name, he's unable to logon at all. I don't really remember, but isn't there a way to select the workgroup from the login screen? I remember there _was_ a dropdown menu, but I don't know if you could type in your own... either way, I'd contact the admin. That way, he could authorize the additional network (yours) and also fix the problem.

hey when you logon on win2000, there should button marked advanced. then from there you should be able to choose your workgroup, and or change your domain.

Unfortunately, you're currently stuck.

When you switch from a domain to a workgroup, the machine has no way of knowing how to contact the domain controller for authentication purposes. Even if you punch in the domain name, it has no way of knowing that it is a domain (since it only "knows" workgroups).

Next time, if you can, set up a local account on the machine which has administrative rights (which I assume you can do since the domain account seems to be able to switch from domain to workgroup), and when you switch to workgroup, log-in using that account.

When you need to switch back, go back into System Properties, and then change it back to domain, and use your domain account to connect to the domain controller for machine authentication purposes.

As for your initial problem - the easiest thing to do would have been to do a "net use" from the domain computer (higher trust requirements) to the workgroup computer (lower trust requirements).

To do that, start up a Command Prompt, then type net use \\<workgroup computer>\ipc$ /user:<workgroup computer>\<workgroup user> *

Assuming they're on the same IP subnet range, this should work, and you should be able to access the workgroup machine from the domain machine (but not the other way around).
