***M40/M45........problems fixed??***

When the M40/M45 first came out I was really interested in it, until I heard about the problems with freezing and the high pitched sound the laptop emits. I'm wondering if these problems have been fixed? I'm still being drawn to this laptop, especially seeing that there are now cheaper models out, however I'll steer clear of it if I find out the problems still exist. Thanks for the info!

?????

never heard of that problem...interesting

I've been using an M40-YP3 for 2 months now, and I've never had any problems with freezing or high-pitched sounds. I think the computer's frozen once over all this time, and the only loud element is the optical drive. Perhaps these problems only occur in some cases. Can you be any more specific, Tech_Girl?

Hmm, well these complaints I've heard mostly at www.notebookreview.com on their message boards. I've also heard of the freezing/high pitch noise at cnet.com (I THINK) in the user reviews, and also on here a while back, if I'm not mistaken.

Like with the A70 models, owners were complaining that their M40 would freeze randomly. Many others also had trouble with a high pitched sound (which seemed to decrease with a USB cord plugged in, but did not entirely go away).

This is the thread where the discussion about the high pitched noise begins:

never had that problem with any m40/45 series machine i have seen or used. if it did exist i believe it was likely in very early production systems. it seems like they are fast to iron any issue like that out, since i remember the tecra m3 had some people complaining when it first came out but now everyone who gets them seems to be happy....

My M40-YP3 doesn't seem to exhibit any of those problems you mentioned Tech_Girl.

Actually, it used to make weird little noises as if it was accessing the CPU or memory or something, but when I flashed the BIOS, those dissappeared.

Now the only thing I can really complain about is a little bit of light leakage on the bottom (that can only be seen on a black screen) and an optical drive that is a little bit noisy. (but not overly noisy)

Feel free to ask any further questions.

i think that confims it, the problem was likely solved with a bios update....that means a current model you would find in the store will not exhibit those same problems.

FROM Singapore, been using the M40 for 2 months already, no such problems. bought my set from harvey norman...

Yea I think that's a pretty clear indication that the problems have been cleared up.

Hi there.... I did have a high pitched noise that was quite annoying, but that was only in a quite room. I had noticed that sound changed when the graphics changed. Which seemed to me to be related to something under the very left side of the keyboard. It seems that when I updated the Bios the noise went away!!! At this very moment it is very quiet and you only hear the fan speed up and slow down, but this is also quiet......very acceptable. My only issue is with the USB ports and I have documented this in another post. I will follow up with that after Toshiba gets back to me........ If they can cure this noise then I am sure the USB port problem.

Cheers!!

Thanks for the responses!

i had the problems described but they stopped with the bios update.
(wifi off when booting and sound when moving graphic stuff).

But today the wifi switch is at off by default i dunno why.

This was corrected in the bios but now it is reappearing.

Might be due to the fact that i putted the lappy to standby mode 2 days ago and then it could not rewake up i had to reboot.
It might be related to that coz it is the only thing i did different since i updated the bios.

Apart from that this lappy is awesome.

if someone knows about the wifi thing let me know.

thx

I haven't seen that issue with the M40.
I have seen 1 or 2 Tecra S1's with a USB issue causing a screech when you moved the mouse, correct drivers were not installed. You have no idea how many machines we see with issues simply caused by someone building a SOE from a Microsoft CD and not installing the correct drivers, particularly Toshiba Common Modules and Power Management.
The issue with the A70 was insufficient grounding of the speaker grills, which has been corrected and easiler fixed.

Hmm looks like the issue may not be fixed:

http://buy.gold-software.com/page_us...U_213_205.html

Those reviews are pretty new too...
not necessarily true.

the issue may have been fixed on the newest models, and the review may be new as well but the review does nto state when the system was purchased so it may have been an older system or it may have been that the system was purchased before it was fixed and the reiew was just posted now. dont always trust the reviews like those.

also of note is that it is not the m40/45 but actually for the m45x a different system in a different chassis, the m40x is not the same as an m40 they even look different. another thing to watch for is that the site doesnt even use the right picture for it, the picture displayed with the link is of an m30/35.

I agree with you totally Fidget. My USB problem has only just been discovered and is now mentioned on the Toshiba website. That would mean that all M40 models out there now that have not updated the DVDRam driver will have the fault including the units on store shelves. So until Toshiba finally gets the updates to the production line, then all new machines should be checked when you buy them and updated with current drivers!!!!!

What was that you said about reps? Hmmm.......
Cheers

hey its not my fault norm, i am waiting to regen with the reps... but you are on the list dont worry man...

Hmm yeah, that's true. I wish I knew for sure if the models out now are faulty or not.
