Ferrari Dark : Acer Ferrari 4005

Mouse
The included mouse is a slick looking mouse. It is just slow in terms of response for my needs. I got "a problem occurred when installing" message every time I installed/uninstalled the mouse. Don't have time to get it working properly, anyone figured it out yet?

I ditched it for my Kensington Optical Elite, corded USB. Smooth and responsive as ever.

The mouse on the laptop is very good. The "widescreen" track area is awesome pair with the widescreen LCD. Some could say the buttons are a bit stiff but I actually prefer the keys to feel solid when pushing down.

Heat
I was very surprised on how cool the Ferrari 4000 runs. The palm rests have yet to get hot at all. I have only experienced a little warmth after prolonged use. The laptop runs much cooler than I was expecting. Even during gaming it remains warm at most.

Update: After much use for about a week laptop runs very cool. I've been doing everything from gaming, web browsing, etc. It does not get hot at all. I have not seen the heat some users have noted.

Note: I never use the laptop on my lap so I cannot comment on the underside of the laptop.

Noise
Fan is on constantly, not that audible. It does not bother me at all. It blows cool air during regular use and is not loud at all. Does turn a step louder when I play Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas

DVD Drive makes some noise upon inserting a disc but afterward tones down to barely noticeable.

Gaming
Big improvement over the ATI 9700. Will play any game out there right now [Why do people ask?] Fans kicks up a notch when gaming and palm rests get only a little warm.

Has run all my games at silky smooth frame rates and images look fantastic.

Case
The case is amazing. Lid looks spectacular with the Carbon Fiber weave and a highly glossy finish. Pictures really don't do it justice.

The rubberized coating has a awesome feel to it as well. The coating definitely insulates the heat from the inside. If it were made of plastic the palm rests would be much hotter.

Build
This thing is solid. Opening and closing the screen is very tight and not loose at all. One great thing I love is the sliding lever to open the screen is made out of rubber which offers great grip.

Screen

Great viewing angles. Colors are crisp and text is very easy to read. Compared to Ferrari 3400 this screen blows it away.

Be sure to turn the DPI setting back to 96DPI to get a much clearer display. Also turning on ClearType improves readability [thanks goeat]

Offers more then enough brightness, I have mine tuned to 100% and it looks great. No Dead Pixels, Looks great from all angles.

Update: The 1680X1050 resolution is awesome, ample work space having multiple windows open at the same time. Works great with Acer's GridVista, my favorite is side by side web browsing.

Sound
Offers very good sound. Speaker are quite clear and crisp and better than most laptops. They just lack bass but still very good in terms of quality.

Headphone output volume is too low when using headphones. I used the same pair on my previous laptop Ferrari 3400 and it was more than adequate. On the Ferrari 4000 it was much too low. Probably gonna opt to buy TurtleBeach USB Advantage to give the volume a boost.

Keyboard
I like the slight curve it employs. It does make some slights clicks and noises pressing down on certain keys. It is a bit noisier than most of the keyboards I have come across. It makes clocks and squeaks when typing.

Acer FineTouch is great, very responsive even with a slight touch on a key

Hard Drive
First thing I did was install Norton Partition Magic and converted the C: drive to NTFS. Partition Magic did a great job and optimized the cluster size for the best fit for my hard drive [4k].

Windows conversion utility has a problem which results in a inefficient cluster size of 512 bytes for NTFS [decreased performance].

For Current Owners
One thing that was odd when I started Partition Magic it picked up a error on the hard drive. Something about the LHS values and CBS or something not matching on 1563667373 on Master Table. Don't remember exactly what it said but I used eRecovery and had it reinstall everything from the CDs to see if the error was still present on Factory Image and it was. Anyways Partition Magic fixed it right away. I don't know what the error meant and don't think it was anything serious but worth mentioning.

Wireless
Great range and performance. Always Very High or High signal strength wherever I take it. Acer SignalUp design to thank for that. Works great with my WPA encrypted wireless network.

Software
All the included Acer applications are awesome. I love Acer GridVista, great for viewing multiple windows. Also Acer eSettings is great for changing different settings within Windows without rebooting, like boot options.

Update: NTI CD & DVD Maker is basiacally a rip off of Roxio's Easy CD & DVD Creator. Works just as well so I am sticking with NTI since its already loaded on the machine

Notebook Bag
Picked up this Targus Bag for 15.4 notebooks fits it perfectly and looks slick and very business like at the same time. I love this case it is very small and compact and is a perfect fit for the notebook. No room left for the laptop to move around or "wiggle." Not too tight either, perfect comfortable fit.

Design
This has to be the sexiest notebook I've put my hands on. The black accent give it a slick, sleek look. The Ferrari emblem on the lid is slick. The previous Ferrari Models were much too flashy. This looks like a laptop I could bring to a business meeting is what I'm trying to say. Not too flashy, just sleek.

The lights give the laptop "flavor". I like the the glow of the power button alot. The Wireless and Bluetooth lights have a cool glow as well. Acer stamps are all slick looking with a metallic finish.

Only two minor downfalls for the Ferrari 4005
-The included bluetooth mouse
-Low volume from headphone output

Update:
-Clicks & Squeaks from the keyboard were annoying at first but I have gotten used to them. It happens a lot less know after I put it through alot more use

I don't quite know what you mean, do?

As far as gaming it looks beautiful, all settings can be turned up to the Max. Runs silky smooth, far better than ATI 9700 as expected.

The hard drive comes in two seperate drives each about 40GB. They are each called partitions. They come in FAT32, I converted to NTFS for better features.

I got the TurtleBeach audio advantage USB...

It works pretty well. Way louder volume with headphones. With my Sharp MD33's the volume is almost too loud on just 1 or 2 volume bars. It also sounds a lot better in games, and now I can set it to hardware sound at high quality. Movie's also sound great since I pass the 5.1 surround through to my digital speakers throught the S/PDIF connection.
Does the ferrari 4000 have 5.1 sound capabilities stock. Also everyone is calling the mouse a downfall for the ferrari.. well you just dont even think about it or ever plug it in becasue most people buy the ferrari for the sleek powerful preformance it delivers. the mouse is a bonus if you really want it

I simply used "convert C: /FS:NTFS" to convert my C drive to NTFS. I'm positive that the cluster size is 4k because all the small files take up 4k space exactly. Partition Magic might have done the job better but the 512 byte cluster size is not true.

I was told that It was not possible to convert the D drive to NTFS - maybe this can only be done using Partition Magic ?

The sound output-level from headphones varies greatly due to variable impedance (Ohms). If you get a set with low impedance then the sound level is okay. I use a Sennheiser P-160 headset wich gives a sufficent output level - I have to turn down the volume to get to a comfortable level (mabe I'm just getting old).

Using turtleBeach audio also has the advantage that the hs output is placed on the side of the laptop. Shouldn't there be an S/PDIF output from the normal Headphones output? In a review of the TM8100 you could see a light comming from the jack - but I don't see this - is it infrared?

my question was

a) What is the benefit in laymans terms for converting to NFTS?

and

b) how easy is it to do?

The headphone jack doubles as S/PDIF jack on the Ferrari 4000 for 5.1 Output. This is true for the Turtle USB advantage as well. You need a special Tosilink cable though to connect in both cases.

Microsoft may have made some changes, I based it on many articles I have read for converting to NTFS.

You are right about the headphones, I knew that, iPod earbuds offer enough volume. But I love my Philips Noise Cancelling Headphone [New] they offer crisp, clean sound with the right amount of bass and aren't big either.

tech9ne, Thanks for your review first off, Based alot of my buying decision on your thoughts.

I have a question though, With the Turtle USB Advantage does it offer better sound and features over Ferrari Realtek? Did you notice a difference?

How is the surround effect? Works well in games as well? After installing it is the Windows sound device disabled [Little speaker icon in tray]?

I ask since Turtle does not list any specs to compare since RealTek does have some good features built into the Ferrari. EAX 2.0 support, etc...

Other than the volume, yes I did notice a difference. No more crackling sound while in games. The TurtleBeach also provides virtual surround sound. It emultes a 5.1 setup which makes movies/games sound better. The effects work alright if you feel like playing a game or listening to a movie in an environment like a cave, auditorium, bathroom, etc... but I don't really use them. The surround sound demos are pretty good though. Much better than the RealTek can do. Plus running BattleField 2 on Hardware sound with High quality didn't work well but it does very well with the TB and sounds better.

NTFS is slightly slower, but more "stable". I.e. if you power off PC with FAT(32) file system, it needs to be checked for errors. NTFS doesn't. NTFS also provides means to grant/deny access to files/folders to certain users.

In case of notebook, these are rather arguable advantages///

Screen Resolutions?

I am seriously considering buying one of these, as you seem to get alot for your money. How much did you pay for yours? The only bad thing i have heard aboout the notebook is that the screen resolution is so high it makes games run at poor frame rates if played at the native resoultion and if not played at native resolution images look stretched and rubbish. is this true when playing games like San Andreas?
I find the big question to be is the turtlebeach PRO Advantage have the sound quality (we know it has good value) to come close to the quality of The PCMCIA Sound Blaster® Audigy® 2 ZS Notebook card. I suppose it depends if you're using 7.1 or 2.1 or even just headphons all the time but for someone like myself living in a dorm with 2.1 klispich Pro Media's what do you guys recomend should i spend the extra 70 and go with the Audigy? My only other comment with the ferrari is that my scroll pad (4-way directional pad) located inbetween the lef and right click on the scratch pad doesnt work for firefox but will work for everything else, anybody else notice this?

Who said this? Games look beautiful on my Ferrari. I play GTA San Andreas at 1024X768 by choice with all settings maxed out and it looks beautiful. You can definitely play at higher resolutions it depends on how smooth you want it to run. I've played at 1280X1024 and it still ran smooth.

The new ATI cards [9700 and on] do not stretch the image it using a special technique to tranform the image into 16:9 ratio. I don't think I've ever played a game in my native for any of the laptops I've owned and they all looked spectacular.
the games don't look stretched or bad... the only thing that looks bad at non native resolutions is the desktop... in games it is fine.

the turtle beach does not compare to the audigy 2 zs notebook if you are looking for real EAX support. If you are willing to overlook not having real EAX then the sound quality isn't much lower. At 1/3 the price it's worth it.
