Forcing WSXGA+ on WXGA screen

I've got a 15.4" WXGA on my Compaq X1000. Is there a way to force it to run at the 1680x1050 res rather than 1280x800, so it interpolates similar to what it does for lower reses (such as 1024x768). I know that many LCD projectors can do this, and i know it looks sh**e, but was just wondering if its possible.

Plus, it wouldn't look nice at all. It's pointless even IF it existed.
