maximizing power/portability for the minimum cost.

I am a college student and would like to purchase a laptop. As a result of being a college student, i have looked into student discounts.

The first laptops i began to look at were the HP Pavillion series. More specifically the dv4000 / zd6000 /ze2000z. I was initially attracted to the HP's just because of the style, they seemed user friendly, and sleek.

Also i noticed that i could pretty much make what i wanted for under 1000$.

However i ran into several problems with these configurations. The dv4000 did not have a dedicated video card, it has the integrated Intel Graphic Media Accelerator 900. I do not care about games for the most part. But i do want a video card that can play dvd's without a problem and can maybe even run starcraft or some old school games without a problem. The zd6000 however made up for this graphics issue with having an ATI XPRESS 200M 128mb.

But! the zd6000 is around 8lb's and that doesnt sound lizke a mobile laptop. I wont be carrying it every day, but i will definitley be carrying it 2/3 a week , around campus. So i dont think 8lb's is light enough.

It seemed like the ze2000z made up for both these issues, but im not sure about its screen.

I havent really looked into IBM, Asus, or Dell. Dell seems like it would be expensive to get what i want, unless i happen to find some coupon.
IBM seems way overpriced, and Asus i havent heard enough about.

Ideally i would like to have a laptop with a processor of around 1.6ghz / a hardrive 40-60 gigs / 512mb ram / a video card that doesnt suck (can handle movies flawlessly and even some old school games) / DVD / CD-RW combo drive / im not sure if i need a new wifi card, i already have a linksys 54g card. Id like a 15" display, and id like it to be around 6lb's. Oh, and decent battery life 3+ hours i guess.

Does anyone think they could help me find a laptop with these specs for around if not under 1000$, or if you dont take a student discount into account perhaps 1200$. I want POWER and MOBILITY without having to pay too much. But the HP's seem to hover over what i mostly want, I like their design, they are very affordable, but i dont think i found the right one yet. Thanks in advance.

Id like a laptop that is around 6lb's has a dedicated video card, and isnt too expensive preferably around 1000$

Mish4,
I'm not sure about what you should look for in your price range. But if your only use for the video card is DVDs and older games (you mentioned Starcraft), then even the Intel GMA 900 should be fine. Both the GMA 900 and the Radeon Xpress 200 will run older games but will struggle with anything new. A review of the GMA900 can be found here: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2143

GMA will run those apps fine, and will get better battery life than a dedicated card. Sounds like the dv4000 is your best fit.

okay narrowing down some thoughts

I was also looking at the zd6000, i dont know how much 8lb's really feels with a laptop, do you recommend i go to bestbuy and lift one of the ones they have on display, to get a feel for it? Im not a weak guy or anything, but if im gonna be carrying it 2/3x a week, it might not be wise to get 8lb's.

I think im going to go with the GMA900, simply because i wont be playing any new games on my laptop, and there is no point of dishing out more money for a video card that i dont need. Also getting a better video card generally means heavier, and more expensive. I just hope i dont have any problems playing videos, my last laptop was a custom made pentium 3, 550mghz, 192ram, 10gig hd with some integrated video card, and it had trouble playing some games and videos. So i dont want something like that to happen.

If anyone has any other laptop suggestions: once again, looking for okay size (6lb) , nice screen, 512ram, 60gig hd, cd-rw/dvd-combo drive/ with a solid build / and reputation. Please let me know.

Thanks in advance!!!
