major display problem installing suse 8.2 on sager 5680

I just got my Sager today - excited but also disappointed. Put in my secondary hard drive and want to install Suse Linux 8.2 on it. It loads up fine until I click installation, installation (ACPI disabled), and safe mode install. After I click on any of those i come to a black screen where the hard drive light blips a bit, but then stops, where it hangs for a while, and then the lcd screen goes berserk. It acts as if I put a magnet on it and then hangs indefinately.

Any suggestions? Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it. I'm a total linux newbie btw.

Ok I'll look into that. I guess I'll either try 9.0 suse or use the newest mandrake. I'll keep looking up stuff on installing suse 8.2 and check this thread periodically.

Actually on second thought I really like suse. Has anyone successfully tried suse 9.0 on the Sager 5680? I'll try mandrake if or redhat if that won't work. My latest version of redhat is 8.0 and mandrake is 8.1, I hope I won't have to because I want linux on my laptop now, and I don't want to pay $80 for it at best buy, i just want the installation cds like you can get on linux. But I hate waiting. I want to play with linux on my new computer now.

But you all can understand that I'm sure.

Why dont you just go and DL the mandrake/rh cd's - of course if you dont have broadband that could be an issue.

I do have broadband, and I could do that, but they don't have the newest versions of linux out on the ftp sites unless you know somewhere. I was on suse.com's mirrors, and 8.2 wasn't even available. 8.2 live eval and 9.0 live eval were, but what does that mean? It is the full version or just a trial or something?

I just thought of something. Do you think I should update the bios? I saw that that was available, but I didn't know if i needed it or not.

If you have recent machine then they were all shipped with the updated BIOS - as far as I know. You can get the 9.2rc2 from Mandrake which is pretty complete. The full version of 9.2 should be out any day now.
