Regarding HDD

I have a friend who wanted to know something about his SATA HDD. He's trying to configure it with the serial cable but NOT in a RAID configuration, you know kinda like IDE but with the serial cable. The BIOS doesnt recognize the hdd when attached this way at all, but a 3rd party RAID configuration software recognizes it as part of an array of RAID devices. Is there a Jumper on the board or on the HDD that should be replaced so that the HDD will be recognized when using the serial cable not in a RAID configuration, or does anyone know a better way to do this?? Its an MSI motherboard by the way!
