Upgrading standard Go6800 to ultra - Page 2

I'd say wait. By the time you "need" to upgrade, there will be a whole new set of cards out with much better performance.

I don't think I'd go through the hassle and expense to go from the regular 6800 to the ultra, but I'm cheap.

I have contacted AW about this exact issue and have been told that the upgrade WILL REQUIRE AT THE VERY LEAST A 220W AC ADAPTER AND OF COURSE THE CARD. NOT EVERYONE WILL REQUIRE A NEW MOBO, I have been told this by 3 different techs over there. To find out if you will need a MoBo swap, which you will have to send your 7700 in for, or to find out if you have a new enough 7700 to simply order the PS and card, follow the link:

http://help.alienware.com/cgi-bin/al...i=&p_topview=1

Once at the article, scroll down and find the field where you can enter your AW serial number. Enter the number for the answer as if you need to send your 7700 in or if you can just order your parts.

Now if you read what cards this article applies to, nothing is mentioned of the ULTRA, the techs however told me that this will apply to the ULTRA upgrade too. Now we know by now that tons of BS comes from the techs so check with a Sr.Tech to see if this applies.

Here is a bit of news, I was told by the tech that he knows for sure that all that will be needed for systems that don't require their systems sent in to AW, will be the PS and ULTRA. He said that the upgrade should appear in the gear shop anytime. Believe it or not, I feel like I am watching Ripley's when talking to these guys, I hope he is right...

Card is $470 MSRP
PS is roughly $100

$570 for the upgrade, not sure its worth it...

A tech also confirmed the X800 XT should be here in about a month, again we will see...
i have my 7700 get in March....and must send it back?????

i was considering just upgrading from the 6800 ddr2 to the 6800 ddr3 this is a noticable increase in performance and can be done at home. the stock 6800 ddr3 is about on par with a overclocked ddr2 model so imaging what a ovrclocked ddr3 would be like?? maybe almost as good as the stock ultra??? any feed back on this?

is there any way to upgrade to just the ddr3 version with out that plate or do we need to get that plate some how? i sure am not going to send in my laptop for a week or more . i am sure i can install it fine my self

I agree ... I'd still like to know though if future upgrades are going to mean sending my lappy in to AW or whether I can perform the upgrade at home...

I don't see the point of DDR2 > DDR3 at the moment ... I can play what I want at good resolutions and like you say when I do need to upgrade something that wipes the floor with the DDR3 will be out .... Mmmmm patience to learn you will need young Jedi .. Mmmm yesssss

The 7800 GTX requires less power hungry with double the performance so you wont be needing 3 batteries and a 600 watt power supply....the gtx currently consumes just 3 watts more than the ultra

Year.Tomorrow i get my 7700 back...
They changed the complet case ,motherboard and the LCD..great..
All new..The Mobo was not right, because at starting the Noti, i only had a white screen and than its restartet from itself..
And my Support manager tells me, i should be waiting with my upgrade to the ddr3 or Ultra (German Support) Because Nvidia or Ati builds Cards who need less power in Future and than this newer Cards can we build in us "older" Boards..
Thanx for this Info..
Oh..and he tells me that they dont can`t speak about this..AW secrets..
When everybody knows that come next Year better Cards in the Market who need less power..they all dont upgrade his system and waiting.. and Nidia or Ati don`t get money.. Or think i stupid...?
PS: I got my 7700 in March this Year...i only have the 180 Watt adapter..so.. when somebody upgrade to the ultra he has buy his system after the March..because the 220 Watt adapter.. the Customer tells my when upgrade YOU MUST CHANGE the Mobo AND the adapter.. I believe the support manager completely well and I believe him..
And im waiting because the Card runs great and the prices going down about the month.

this may sound like a very silly question, but will the ultra card work in the UK due to this power problem thing?

iirc it's not a power problem , it is just that the ultra requires more power and the 1st generation 7700's which have the ddr2 version have a power pack that does not output enough power ...

I could be wrong on this so feel free to correct me
