Why no Dell 15" laptop with decent graphics card?

The x300 is pretty lame. When will Dell release a 15 inch laptop with either an nvidia go6600 or Ati x700 or better? I don't want a 17 incher like the 9300 or xps and all that's available in the 6000 is the x300. Anyone with any thoughts? Thinking of going with an Asus instead.

Profits for Dell, my friend. Why cater to everyone with an all-in-one product when you can segregate different products to different markets? Then you are forced to pay more if you want higher quality. Unfortunately it's simple and effective business ethics.

That only works if they have a monopoly. There are far too many competitors that are offering a 15incher with good graphics. Hence it makes no sense for them not to offer it because it'll just drove customers like me over to Asus, Sager or one of the others. I've got to think Dell will update the 6000 soon or something.

If there are so many out there, then your problem is solved, isn't it? The fact that you're specifically looking for a Dell shows how much of a monopoly they have.

The M70 has a 15.4" screen and one of the nicest GPUs available in laptops today. Of course you pay dearly for the combination.

The 8600 has a 9600Pro in it which was fairly high on the line when it was introduced.

I don't think you understand the definition of a monopoly. Dell has nothing even CLOSE to a monopoly. There's a zillion brands of computers out there. The only reason I wanted to stick with Dell is because I've always had dells since back when I was in college. I'm about to leave and think it's sad that they are not serving a segment of the customer base. Just about every other manufacturer from HP and Compaq to Sager, Asus, Sony, Chembook...all the clevo clones etc etc etc offers a 15 inch notebook with a good graphics card for gaming. I just find it curious that Dell has decided to skip this segment and risk losing customers.i

I always thought that it would take away their sales of 9300s.

just one word: M70

It's called brand loyalty.

Dell already cover that field. Get yourself a D810 with a 128MB X600 or the M70 with a 256MB Nvidia QuadroFX Go 1400. The X600 benchmarks only 30% better than the X300, but the 1400 is superior to both the X700 and the 6600. Both have 15.4" wide-screens. Really fine machines.

Problem with the m70 d810 options

The only problem is tha the M70 suffers from a toasty, power hungry video card that many report heat isses with, the d810 with it's x600 ( you can get the x300 to perform the same as the x600 by clocking it up to manufacturers specs) is similar, heat issues reported by its users, see cnet and other forums. Perhaps there's an inefficiency in their chassis design??
I considered both of them as you can get one of these sometimes at the outlet for the same price as a 6000 or 9300 new.

I haven't read the cnet forums, but I can tell you that I've never had any problems whatsoever with heat or stability with my Go1400. As long as the clock speeds are left alone, the card really isn't too power hungry, either. Of course if you're gaming or rendering, or in some way utilizing the power of the card, then yes, there will be power issues just like any card will have. But for average use, the card operates very efficiently.

Stupidity? Lack of knowledge of consumer demand?

I almost bought an inspiron 6000 but the x300 card steered me toward the 9300 model, see my detailed post as to why. One thing, the 9300 has the nvidia 6800 go card, plenty of headroom for anything you can throw at it. You can get the exact same specs on a 9300 for the same price or maybe a hundred dollars more depending on what you want.
The M70 uses a cad oriented nvidia quadro card, that is almost as good as the 6800 onthe 9300 inspiron, difference being its a professional workstation that costs a thousand dollars more unless you can get a good deal at the "outlet".

Many users of the m70 and D810 models complain about heat issues, these systems have a less efficient chassis when it comes to dissapating heat. Both the 6000 and the 9300 are much more efficient at heat dissapation.
The 9300 is cheaper than these business oriented systems and has a larger screen, better sound and better graphics.

There is the 9300, are you aware that it is ONLY half an inch deeper and an inch wider than the inspiron 6000??, It was a no brainer for me especially since the 9300 offers the 6800 nvidia go card with 256 megs and costs far less than an M70. There are pictures posted of a 9300 and 6000 side by side while opened and also stacked, the pictures clearly illustrate how the two systems are not that much different in size yet whats under the hood is a different story.

I don't have any issues with graphics and my m70. I do have some heat on the center bottom but it isn't coming from the graphics or processor. I think in part it is coming from the intel card, which will be getting replaced this week.

All in all this machine rocks. The build quality is great, solid, and very quiet.

I love it

why are you getting the intel card replaced and how long have you had your machine? I have no idea what is considered to be super hot or normal, how do you check that? try to fry an egg on it?

thanks

I've had mine since April. It is hot, not fry and egg hot LOL. I have taken the cover off of where the minipci card, bluetooth card and one of the ram sticks sits. The ram is warm, the bluetooth is kinda warm I guess, although I think it is more warm from the surroundings as the intel card is right next to it and the hottest of the three.

The heat is really just an extra concern that I hope will at least be somewhat alleviated. I'm not expecting it to get icy cold by any measure, but I do hope for some reduciton.

What I really am getting it replaced for is that I'm tired of it. I'll be at work and throughout the day my signal strength will fluctuate and I'll get logged off of trillian, about 8-10 times a day I'd say. At home I noticed that with my wireless connection I get 1/3rd the download speed with it. I haven't done as much wireless testing at home truthfully 'casue I have a docking station and keep it there mostly.

edit: I see you have an m70, with an 80gig 7.2k hd, nice The 60 was the only one available when I got it. Btw, the wuxga that you and I have is 1920x1200, not 1600...but boy is it a bute!
