80GB 5400 vs 100GB 5400 vs 60GB 7200

The three harddrives I'm looking at are the 80 GB 5400 Seagate Momentus, the 100 GB 5400 Seagate Momentus, or the Hitachi 60 GB 7200.

The 80GB Seagate is ~$140
The 100GB Seagate is ~$170
The 60GB Hitachi is ~$200

Which of these wins performance-wise? doesnt the 60 GB Hitachi act nto much faster than one of the 5400s if the HD space is over halfway taken up? I have the 100 GB 4200 rpm fujitsu..therefore..no matter what I get I'll notice a difference.

What do you guys think?

The Hitachi will have the best performance, but not by much. If I had a chance to choose again, I would have gone with a larger drive. The performance difference to me has not met my expectations. I will probably upgrade to a larger drive at some point.

You will also see better performance in some apps with the slower drives if you make partitions (2) and load the apps that need the speed on the first partition so they do not get written to the outer edge.

As far as overall performance the Hitachi drive will still smoke the other two even at the edges.

The 100 gig will have faster transfer rates than the 7k60
The 7k60 will have faster seeks than the 100 gig.

If you look up the spec on the drives you will see that almost all of them have the same seek times of 10-12ms.
Transfer rates vary
Hitachi 7200 rpm
7k100
100GB 78.6MB/sec
80/60GB 70.1MB/sec

7k60
60GB 64.7MB/sec

Hitachi 5400 rpm
5k100
61.6MB/sec

Hitachi 4200 rpm
4k80
43.9MB/sec

Seagate
Momentus 7200
All sizes 67.4MB/sec

Momentus 5400
All sizes 57.6MB/sec

Looking at these speeds which are all the max for any given drive you will see that the new Hitachi is the best performer at 78MB. Now over a 4200 drive which is at 43MB you are going to see a big change in performance. Now the 7k60 7200rpm drives do not gain that much over the 5400 drives 64MB over 61MB. My person thinking is the 5k100 drives are the best deal but is you want all out performance then hold out and get the 100GB 7K100 when they are in stock which looks like it will be a little while.

I used both hard drives Seagate 5400 100GB and Hitach 7200 60gb hard drives. The 7200 rpm is a bit louder then 5400rpm. Is there any pefromance advantage with 7200 rpm over 5400? I don't really know on the old laptop I could get windows installed faster on seageate 5400 hard drive than hitachi. Many people who have 7200rpm will tell they are better but that might be just a feeling. I didn't notice any difference between these two. I even belive that seagate hard drive is pefrorming better than hitachi.

I used some hard drive test, first I ran short and then long test, the one on the picture is a long test. Hitach 60gb 7200rpm vs Seagate 5400rpm 100gb hard drive

There is no way of knowing that, but estimates I have heard are $300 and up when it first comes out. You have to understand that it will be expensive because it is new and in high demand by all laptop users. I personally, after much research into the topic, am waiting for the 80 & 100gb 7200K to come out so that the price lowers on the 100gb 5400K. I will then grab one of those suckers because I havent seen enough difference to justify paying more for less storage. Will have to see the numbers when they come out though.

Should be pretty fast, I had a 16MB 60GB Toshiba drive that i replaced with a 7200 RPM drive, didnt 'feel' faster than the 16mb 5400.

I have the Toshiba 5400 100GB drive with 16MB buffer. I just ran HD tach on it and it had very poor scrores. I will try to post a screen shot of it later tonight. I only have mine in there until the Hitachi 7k100 100GB drives are around then I'm getting one of those.
