So what is the consensus of the group? 7200 60 gb Hitachi makes no appreciable diff over 5400 60 gb Hitachi?

This is really important to know. Please respond and let me know. Thanks.

I have both, the 5K60 is my backup HDD on the i8600. The 7K60 just kicks a**, I do a bit of newgroup stuff and there is an appreciable difference in the write and access rates and boots faster as well.

The benchmarks are out there, especially on tomshardware site, do a search. However, get the 7K60 if I were you...my 2c

There is a appreciable difference comparing the 5k60 but not using a higher capacity drive. As the charts show above, anything past the first ~7gb a 100gb 5400 drive will surpass the 7k60 in transfer rates. Seeks will be faster on the 7k60.
The price difference between the 2 is nothing so if you dont plan on having more than 20 gigs of info on the drive then get the 7k60. If you plan on having more then 20gigs get the 100gig 5400.
Personally I like to have about 150gigs on my computer so I will be replacing the dvd drive with a second 100gig momentus. They have a 5 year warranty which most of the other manufacturers lack.

I'm with you RamIt on the Momentus 100Gb 5400rpm, very nice and 5 yr warranty that can't be beat. Have one right here as well...

It's always the classic case of speed versus storage, what do you wish to compromise on...then again, if I can get the fabled 7K100, I have BOTH...[sigh]..when I get it....

Anyone get any benches on the Fujitsu 5400rpm 100gb hard drive that some people are getting? I might try to bench mine tonight, but wondered if anyone else had already.

I'm really torn between the seagates and the toshibas..that 16 mb cache is really tempting..and theyre cheaper..

OK got the toshiba installed. First, let me say it is 100 times quieter. I pulled a Hitachi 80GB 5400 rpm drive out. Second, it runs WAY cooler, 5C according to fangui and centrion hardware control. Third, I ghosted the Hitachi to a desktop HD as I only have one laptop adapter to plug into a desktop board. Going from the Hitachi to the desktop took 1/2 hour for 12GB of data. The drive got scorching hot too. Ghost indicated that the transfer rate was about 600MB/MIN from Hitachi to WD desktop drive. When I ghosted back to the new Toshiba, it took about 8 mins and ghost indicated 1800MB/MIN. I'm not sure if this in indicative of anything or not, but interesting none the less.

I was playing some games last night on my XPS2 with the Toshiba 100GB drive and I thought it was performing quite well. I did not notice any long load times or anything like that. SO for now I'm very happy with it. I have loaded about 40 gigs on it so far. The games I play are UT2004, Farcry, Call of Duty, BF1942, BF2, EQ2, Planetside and some others I cannot think of right now. UT2004 at 1600x1200 high everything is great. The others all look great too. I'm very happy with mine so far. Tonight I will be having my first game night with friends using the XPS2. They all have Shuttles with 3.2 P4's and x800 gpu cards, the same as my desktop machine and I can tell you this laptop is much better and a lot quieter.

Sorry I got off the topic. I think the Toshiba 5400 100GB drive with 16MB buffer works great. The Hitachi 7200 frive will have to come way down in price before I buy one.

more first hand experiences with the toshiba?

I went with the marginally faster 60GB 7200RPM hitachi because it was the best value at the time and it's been on the market for a while.
