Someone please just tell me which S Series to buy!

I have never been more confused than by the Sony numbering. I've searched here, read till my eyes are blurry, and gone over the Sony site.

What I want is a 13" WXGA screen for travel and Photoshop work. I don't know how much difference the higher end processors make but I want at least 1.7 Dothan or 1.73 Sonoma. I want 2GB RAM. I read a lot of posts about only finding RAM for $350 for a 1GB stick, and using 2 in a Sony thats only rated for 1GB. Yet on the Sony site many say they take 2GB, and Crucial (and others) have RAM for the S Series for $3-400 for 2 sticks of 1GB DDR2. The Crucial site said 200 pin, and I see here notes about 170 pin.

Can anyone just tell me which model to buy with, lets say, a Dothan 1.8-2.0 Pentium M that will take 2GB RAM, and a Sonoma 1.73-1.86 that takes2GB DDR2? I want a DVDR but nor dual layer.

If the RAM really is that much more expensive, I may just get the Dell 700m.
(you have a golden oportunity to save me from the love-hate relationship many seem to have with Dell).

Also, is there a "best buy" Sony warrentee? I don't mind taking it to a shop, but want the work done local. I think I'm less worried about damage than about the computer just dying, but I'll take your advice.

I'm not as knowledgable as you guys, I just want a fast stable PC for Photoshop (no games) at the best price I can. I don't care which numbers follow the "S", and I don't need to buy now, but will if the price is right.

Are there models slightly older that would do me well (again its that numbers thing...hard to tell which are old and new).

Any and all words of wisdom, opinions, rants and raves are greatly needed.

BTW, is EBay risky with a buy of this type?

It won't be only your eyes in pain after you get an S- you will encounter a tiny airport inside this fine machine so beware of that point.
Ebay is not the place for this in my mind- read previous entries about scams.

Not sure what you mean by airport, but 10-4 on the EBay.

Is there a "best model" for me (either current or last years)?

If you can get a local pickup on ebay gofor it thats how i got mine! vgn-s360p, sealed box, 10month warranty, for a lot lot lot cheaper then the places that still had the s360 in stock, but i also live in san diego and all sorts of stuff gets sold on ebay around here.

The s360 the way to go but the s380/480 are still great machines

Any of the S series would be fine for Photoshop. You get a better video card on the 360, but if you don't care about games it's not that important (photoshop will run the same). Apparently, the 360 gets better battery life though.

So can I use the 200 pin memory that the memory sites say (Crucial, Arch Memory, Memory Stock)? Its far cheaper than the swissbit.

NO! not on the s360/270 modals they use 170pin MICRODIMM its a bit more expencive then the standard 200 pin but it you compared them side to side thr microdimms about half the size. So far the cheapest stick of 512 that i found goes for $70 from ewiz.com(thats what i bought and it works great

WOW! thats scary Keeping my fingers crossed... So far the hefty price tag has been worth it.

HOWEVER, when i crack open my s360 i noticed the Mobos made by foxconn and they make some quality stuff. I dont know if they made the 200/100's.
