i'm with the others. any reason why u can't get cable or dsl? i'd recommend cable bc you're not required to buy into an isp or any other services (usually). for instance, i have roadrunner and my cellphone as my only phone line. dsl would be moronic for me as it means i'd have to pay for phone service and then plop the internet access on top of it as well as the cost of the isp. w/ cable i can get JUST internet w/o having to sign up for cable services (tho this might vary per location), and the cable company IS the isp. i get email addresses if i choose to use them, web space, and a nice 5mb/s download speed.
if however u have a phone landline, a cheap dsl might be a better option. i'd look into all of the hidden costs and make your decision from there.
a good question is: what do u use aol for? when my family had it back in the day, all the "added benefits" basically annoyed the sh!t out of me. i'd just log on and minimize it while using my email client to check my mail (hotmail and school) and use netscape or IE to browse the web. AOL has a new free email service much like hotmail/yahoo/google offer. afaik u could keep your address, drop AOL as an isp and access your email addresses via the web mail service. add your internet connection of choice and u might be set.
just curious, are there any wireless networks that r open in your area? (click on the little "radar" icon along the top right of the screen and u'll get a list of potential networks).
