I just got the AR150 series and it's also very cool. I've owned a Dell Inspiron 9300 and a E1705, and a host of other machines. I also work full time as a computer tech at our local computer repair store.
I will say that as far as quality goes, the Sony's typically are a little better. I'm speaking of quality of plastics, overall design, screen brightness and color rendition, etc. Dell will give you better bang for your buck and will give you more options as you cutomize the machine you want.
The new HP series (dv 2000. 6000, 9000) are very intersting as they combine some of the benefits of the Dell with the sex appeal of the Sony systems. They run a little cheaper then the comparable Sony machines and the 9000 series offers a dual lamp screen with awesome contrast.
The bottom line is find at least 3 machines and do a chart, marking the cons and the pros for each model, read some user reviews, and see if you can get somewhere to touch and feel the machine for yourself.
