From my experience - HP>Dell>Sony
Had a Sony VAIO, had problems from the start, Sony never fixed the machine right and it died completely in just 14 months. Then they wanted 700 to repair it. Lousy, lousy, lousy customer service. Thye had a too bad, but were Sony attitude about all of it.

I only buy Sony now when there is not a choice. Thye could care less about their customers.

Highly recommend HP.

I have a DELL desktop that is a worthless piece of s**t. I would not give you a plug nickel for that whole, stupid, rotten, stinking, worthless, useless, no good for anything company & the crap they build. Sorry for the rant but I feel better now<G> I also have an OLD Gateway desktop that is still running good. I just got my daughter a HP DV4000
for college & so far it seems great.

Sonys are very pretty computers but the build quality of the case is poor (key markings warring off the keyboard in under a year, ect.) Dell is passable but for your money you tend to get more from an HP, 1 year warranty vs 90 days on a dell for example. 99% of the time they are almost the same price spec for spec and HP normally has something to give it an edge. Quickplay for example is not in and of itself a reason to get one brand or another, but very quickly the pinpricks HP has over dell makes it a better value.

HP also offers WAY more choice then dell does (AMD), a better return policy and if you have an ESP you might not get India for tech support and if you have a total one ESP you have an 80% chance of getting Canada

I think the general public has it set in their minds that Dells are the best systems and Sony's are the absolute best while HP isn't even on the scopes. After owning a Gateway desktop and a Dell desktop I can say that I like my Gateway more than my Dell. I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 9300 notebook and I really didn't like it. THe internal speakers and subwoofer were not as loud as the Dell rep said and the Pentium M was really slow when running AutoCAD. I think MilieanHPS said it pretty darned good when he said "Sonys are very pretty computers..." Sony is like the Apple of PC's, their computers look good but there are much better solutions from other companies (even Dell) that cost alot less.

I would say that HP is the best brand out there, but that is just my opinion after getting off the phone with a sales rep. Pretty much every computer company has outsourced their phone-in tech support to India. This equates lower costs to the consumers. This is good and bad, it is good because of the lower costs and it is bad because there is sometimes a communicational barrier and the tech support agent might not understand the problem.

I say get whatever brand will give you the best deal, this means that Sony is out of the picture. It all really depends what you are looking for but the HP notebooks featuring Centrino technology are ranked pretty high. HP's top-of-the-line notebook is also ranked pretty high and offers solutions that are much cheaper than many other computer companies.

I just bought the XPS 2 and I'm impressed with the service. The screen had 1 dead pixel and they sent a tech to my house and replaced the monitor 3 days later

I have always had good luck with HP. I have worked on alot of dells and I just dont like them, Sonys arnt bad systems but they dont deserve the hype they sometimes get.

Of the three I would have to go HP>Sony>Dell.

What are you looking for in a notebook?

Portability ???
Performance ???
Build Quality ???
Price ???

This will help give you a better answer to your question.

it also all depends on what you are looking for, HP for example has nothing that come close to the XPS but most other notebooks we have same or better then dell.

HP and Compaq

Based on many laptops/notebooks that I have owned or managed for various companies, the best service has been HP, Apple, and Compaq, followed by Gateway (pre-takeover), IBM, Sony, Acer, and Sager, then at the next level, Toshiba and Dell, and at the very bottom, Midwest Micro and other tier 3 importers.

I looked at HP, but they failed to have an ultimate solution.

They had a good processer and a crap graphics card, or a good graphics card, but a P4.

I settled with Dell, and I'm happy with it.

You're posting this in the HP section of the forums. Ugh... what do you expect the answers to be? If you want a whole range of opinions, try posting in the notebook general section.

I would say HP>eMachines

I bought an HP zv6000 and I couldn't be happier. And I only spent $1100 on it.
I had to buy it because I had a Dell Inspiron 5100 with that stupid heat defect. It overheats and Dell refuses to call in a recall. It was overheating so much it caused one of my RAM slots to fail. So it was either spend $1000 on a new motherboard (after-warenty work) or get a new laptop.

HP>Dell>Sony
Is sad that HP now starts with good GPU. I got a ZE4610 and rocks.
The only issue is that the video card is the 320M 128MB shared. Up to day I can play WoW and BFV on that machine.

had a sony vaio desktop. powersupply died within 3 months. customer service pretty much told me they would have to rebuild from scratch, and it would cost more than i paid for it. when i told them i had a warrenty, they said it was my fault for leaving it on for "extended periods" wtf 2 days isnt THAT long. when i yelled at them they basically told me to F*ck myself. poorly designed computer, crappy customer support. the computers look sexy and come with good software tho, thats a plus

Well I would say HP is the best. I have known a number of people that have had HP's and have an zero problems with them. My pap being one of them. As for Sony, I do not know too much about them. Dell on the other hand, I have first hand found out how poor they are made. I have had the following replaced in my computer(Dell Inspiron 600m):

2 Motherboards
1 256MB card
1 128 MB card
1 modem
1 hard drive
1 touch pad
1 DVD/CD RW drive
1 processor
1 on/off, volume button face cover (or whatever it would be called)
1 wireless card

Their support is not the best either. I actually had to threaten to file suit with the PA state lemon law to get my last issue fixed. Even then they were not too apt to fix it. It is funny, I asked the girl(who could hardly speak a word of English) if my computer was a lemon, she said it wanst. I then started listing all the trouble that I have had with it. I then said I was pretty sure she knew that, because it was probably right in front of her and she said it was. I then asked her if she could honestly say to me that this computer is not a lemon even concidering all the trouble I have had with it, and she said that it was not a lemon. I then told her she was lying to me and hung up the phone. I was so frustrated. I purchased an HP DV1000t hoping that I will have better luck with it than my 600m. I will tell you on thing though, I will NEVER buy another dell.
