Networking Trouble

I am having trouble with my network/ network card? I can load web pages fine and play games online. My problem comes when I try to download files that take more then ~1min to download. A little way through, I get the error:

"The connection with the server was reset"

I am on a campus network and when I try to copy a file from another computer, I get the error:

"The network device is no longer available."

I have tried lots of stuff but nothing has worked. Any ideas?

What OS? How large are the files? You're talking 10/100/1000 LAN and not wireless correct?

I am using XP Pro

I get the error using either wireless or wired connection. However, when I use a wireless VPN (only some places available) I do not get the error.
The error occurs with files any size from ~3mb and up
It seems like it times out, it does not always transfer the same amount before erroring out. I have run out of ideas and settings to change and might just reinstall windows.
