Review: TomT's - Evesham Quest Roma T37

Evesham Quest Roma T37

I’ve only had the laptop about 40minutes, so this is a first impression as to what I think of it ! My last laptop was an Acer Travelmate 244LM (Celeron .26Ghz), so I will be comparing to that.

Looks.
The case is nice looking, slim and neatly trimmed. The keyboard layout is a little square but is smart in appearance. It’s not the flashiest looking laptop, but it’s defiantly not the ugliest.

Build Quality.
The build quality seems to be good. The case feels sturdy and everything feels quite solid. The screen hinges are quite tight, but not enough to cause any worry. The black finish is not quite smooth, but feels nice. The only problem I could see is it picks up finger marks.

Screen.
The screen is a 15.4” ‘X-Bright’ widescreen TFT.
Running @ 1280 x 800 the image quality is excellent, very clear with vibrant colours. I can’t see any dead pixels and have test using ‘Dead Pixel Buddy’. As this is an X-Bright screen it is very glossy and looks great ! The screen is a massive improvement on my old Acer.

Keyboard & Trackpad.
The keyboard is nice, all the usual buttons are there in an easy to find layout. The feels of the keyboard is slightly ‘clicky’ not as smooth as a desktop pc keyboard, but as nice as the Acer. The trackpad is located directly below the keyboard, which could cause users with big hands a few problems. For me it’s not an issue.

Performance.
I’ve not had too much time to test the performance, but it feels a lot quicker than my old Acer. Windows loads fast and is very responsive. 3Dmark 2003 set at default setting returned a result of 5732. Whilst it was running the picture quality was excellent, very smooth and clear.

In normal use the laptop is silent, this is a bonus as the Acer was VERY noisy. When running 3DMark the fan revved up but was still quieter than the Acer.

Sound is quite loud for a laptop, a lot louder than the Acer, I would be happy watching a DVD at this sound level.

The Wireless detected and connected to my network without any problems, performance and distance seem to be as good as the Acer with a Belkin 54G PCMCIA Card.

Specification.

AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology MT-37
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
512MB DDR RAM
80GB Hard Drive
128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X700
15.4" Widescreen TFT display (1280 x 800)
Built in Wireless LAN and Bluetooth
DVD/CD-RW/ Dual Layer DVD-RW drive
10/100 LAN & Modem v92 56k
Built in audio & speakers
4x USB2.0, VGA, PCMCIA Type II x 1
Dimensions 355mm x 255mm x 30mm
Weight 2.8kg

I purchased the Quest Roma with and additional 512MB Ram and extended the warranty to 2 years onsite.

Overall I’m pleased with the laptop. For the money it seems to be a good spec, well built and nicely presented.

Any questions please ask.

Can you verify that this notebook is basically a rebranded msi? Thats what it appears to be from the pictures. Also I was wondering how the build is behind that lcd screen. I know on some models when you push on the back it causes ripplse in the screen while on some more solidly built notebooks this does not occur. I was also wondering if this screen appears to have any of the sparkly effect that some people have been reporting with the glossy type screens. Lastly please post Pics if you get the chance. Thanks again, Rob

Sounds like a very nice notebook. As I said in the other thread, I'm interested in battery life. I don't really care much for those battery test programs. Instead I trust the actual usage tests more. If you could just use your laptop as you would normally and say how much battery life you get, that would just be great.

Yes it look like an MSI M635.

I haven't noticed any sparkles etc, and the screen quite solid.. I've noticed any ripples when pressing the back of the screen..ve been

I probably could cause some ripples.. but it would take a reasonable amount of effort..

I've been online for about 20 minutes (using wireless) and the battery meter is currently reporting 3hrs left...

I will try and post some images tomorrow....

Awesome, sounds like a good notebook. I can't wait to see some pics.

Wow that is a nice notebook with the MT(25w) Turion 64 at that! It performs way better than I thought. Now if the ms-1029 could only be available here in the US too. MSIcomputer.com has it listed as "Coming Soon..." since forever...

Just thought I'd add this:

I called Evesham regarding the keyboard.. They are sending an engineer out on Monday to have a look at it !!

I'll keep you posted !

Great! Thanks TomT for the quick review - I'm waiting for the pictures and some more impressions. Now I just hope MSI releases this laptop in other parts of Europe quickly... unlike some rumors of a delay until September I've seen in the LaptopLogic thread.

Great! Another Turion notebook confirmed in the wild. How much was it? Does it heat up when you put it under load? Battery life?

Congrats!!!

Any updates after a few days of use?

The US release is also delayed . It's been listed as coming soon for a GOOD WHILE now... Xmeld.com told me that they were not optimistic about a July release any more since MSI have been pushing the release date of the ms-1029 further and further ahead. I'm just currious as to why MSI does this on the US market??? The boat ****** sank or something?

sounds like a nice machine.. very good 3dmark03 score. as expected with the x700.. battery life seems about the same as a p-m sonoma

The screen is Fantastic.. Very sharp and clear..
The build quailty is good, but I have noticed a couple of little 'niggles'

The battery is not tightly fitted.. So with it on your knee the battery wobbles a little. As mentioned the keyboard is 'clicky'. The lid on mine is not shutting flush. The left side is raised slightly. Evesham are due out to this today, to look / replace if needed. If these 'niggles' aren't fixable, then I may have to re-think whether to keep it !!!

Under normal use I can't hear the fan, but when running 3DMark I could hear it, but its not to loud. I've not noticed any problems with heat from the case..

If the niggles are isolated and can be fixed, then I will be very happy with this laptop..

Picture soon, once Evesham have been !!

Weird, does it even lock properly when it does this, when closing the lid? Also I heard the US release have some modifications/changes to it. It is a different case and some other minor things that have been changed for the US release according to xmeld.com. Maybe MSI are more concerned about things like this on the US market and that's why it is delayed? Don't know. It's not released here yet.

OK..

Evesham have been out with a replacement laptop.

The feel of this new unit is the same as the current one..:

The keyboard is still clicky.
The lid does fit better on the new unit, and the battery is not quite as loose.

But for a laptop cost me £1019.91, I feel it should have a better keyboard than this.

I have spoken to Evesham and they have agreed to collect the laptop in the morning and refund all my money !!

So I looking again for a decent laptop !!
Current favourite is Acer Aspire 1694WMLi upgraded to 1GB and extended warranty. Comments PLEASE !!

When the lid is closed, It is quite easy to open without releasing the lock !!
No doubt they will have to fix that!

Have you had a chanse to see what the stock core and mem clocks are on the GPU?

The laptop has gone back !
I liked it. but was not happy with the 'niggles' I had found.

I've ordered an Acer Aspire 1694WMLi.. Should be here tomorrow..

I would not accept the issues with the lid/screen myself. To bad they couldn't make it right and faild due to poor chassie quallity! I'm hoping none of these issues will be found in the US release... If there is a problem I don't know what my alternative would be!
