"I had 2 customers with dead dell hard drives last week alone. Not uncommon, I have no idea what they do with handling drives thats different."
Did you know the hard drives are supplied by Toshiba?
"That said - I get the calls from the people unhappy with dell - people with working machines dont call the PC repair tech. And there are alot of Dels in town I am sure, so I am probably seeing a smaller percentage than I might otherwise think."
Yup, you're right. The percentage of unhappy customers is very low compared to the percentage of happy customers.
"Thier lower end systems I have been replacing alot of fans and power supplies in the area, relatively new machines too."
I don't know about the lower-end ones, but I know that the mid-line 4600 has had a power supply issue. I'm guessing the lower-end ones do, too, as they are very low-quality machines meant for people who don't have much money. Unfortunately, they are often bought by people who have enough money for a better one, but just don't know enough to buy the better one. They just want to save money. That's where a lot of unhappy customers come from.
