M680 and nVidia GeForce Ge6800 256MB - together at last

Well, this would officially be my first post, and quite a good note to come in on if you ask me!

Who am I? I am Otto. I am a GW employee. I am here on my own in no official capacity. BUT I have received quite a few calls and emails from members of this forum over the past few weeks, so that is why I'm here. I have a passion, like many of you, for technology and computers, so why not hang out in what looks to be the premier discussion board for notebooks?

Ok, enough with the bs: the Gateway M680 system now has the nVidia GeForce Ge6800 256MB as a option for the video card. Yes, you read that correctly.

Gateway.com - M680XL configurator

Very cool, I know. I had been banging a drum internally at Gateway (no, not literally), but I have been asking and asking and asking when were we going to going to get a 256MB option on the M680 and I am very glad that this day is here because Otto is getting a new notebook (this will come as no surprise to those of you who have interacted with me).

$0.02

Otto-GW, this option is great to hear. I can't wait for the option to trickle down to the BB 7000 series Speaking of the 7000 series notebooks, can you get GW to post updated WIFI drivers from Broadcom? I have YET to be able to connect to my network with the 108 mbps. I've even tried HPs and Dells drivers which are constantly updated. In case you are wondering, I have a DLINK DI624 at home and I know work has a 108 mbps WIFI router. It seems like GW forgot about their customers who don't order direct.
Cheers

I doubt you'll really notice the difference in speed. I also have the DI624 rev C which has been slowly dyin gout on me. Unless im backing up major info like harddrive to harddrive moving of massive amounts of GB's then you wont notice the real difference. You have worry about dropping connections which the DI624 is famous for about 2 years of use.

Wow, looks like the 9300 has some serious competition now. No more, 'well if you're a hardcore gamer, then the 9300's better than the m680.'

How's the battery life affected by this? I know one of the things the m680 had going for it was battery life, but with the inclusion of this more powerful card, I'd expect battery life to decrease, but by how much?
Not only will the battery be affected, but also the heat!...and with higher heat would follow greater fan noise.

The left side palm rest is already very warm with extensive use, so imagine what the m680 with nVidia GeForce Ge6800 256MB can do.

But the good side of it is, you get a good graphic card with, unlike the DELL, a great display.

Oh, is there a way for us current m680 owners to upgrade to the nVidia graphic card?

I have noticed some drop-outs if I have the older drivers installed for my broadcom card. Check to see you have the latest firmware v.2.50 on the DI-624 model c. For the wireless settings make sure to turn off Super G Dynamic Turbo and just put it on Super G.

A few quick responses:

ElSid: From my past interactions with the folks who handle that stuff (i.e., driver updates), I was informed that drivers are posted once they have been tested and verified internally, which can take some time given the volume of drivers that they deal with. But they will get them updated as soon as they can.

Battery Life: I would imagine that this will impact battery life to some extent. We'll have to wait an see once benchmarks start rolling out though, as I have yet to interact with a system that has the 6800 in it.

Heat: I've read quite a few discussions concerning the heat that M680 produces, but to be fair to the system engineers, we aren't going to release a system that is destined to fail under stress. So I'll have to take the positive point of view that the M680 with a 6800 in it will perform beautifully.

Upgrading: I have already sent an email up my chain asking that very same question. I'll let you know.

Thanks for the replies Otto. I have a few questions.

1. Will GW make a new BIOS that allows fan speed to be controlled?

2. When will there be new drivers, if any, for the x700 card? The only one that works is the default GW ones and none of the new catalysts or omegas work. What's up with that?

silverwolf0: From my experience, we typically do not offer BIOS updates that expand upon the initial functionality of the original BIOS in that manner, but as I say with all things around here, you never know.

And in regards to the drivers for the x700 card: As I mentioned above in my response to ElSid, driver updates happen as soon as they can and that goes doubly so for video card updates as I know people are always wanting the latest.

I know this doesn't have anything to do with the m680, but can you find out if the 7510GX has 256MB of dedicated RAM or if it is hypermemory?

Great note great timming. I'm in the process of ordering m680 today, I'll clearly upgrade to the nvidia card, wow great timming! They said it'll take untill sept, bad timming. Can you turn the card down when not needed to keep the temps down?

Just spoke to someone. There isn't. Oh well. There's always next time.
O.K....who wants to buy my m680?
Vancomycin,

I thought you were going to by mine. Didn't your wife need one. Think of it, two M680 side by side. I think it would bring you two closer together Priceless.

Bah. No Ultra.
The go 6800 is only 20-30% over an x700 and it draws a lot more juice.
wish I had waited to buy mine a little longer then...this frickin blows
post #20 of 56
Yeah, well, all I care is that the X700 will perform well with both COD II when it comes out and BF2 right now
