HD-DVD VS Blu Ray....Which One!

I've been reading alot on this and was wondering what you would like to see for a replacement slim type drive for you laptop.

I personally like to reverse compatabilty aspect, but Sony's Blu Ray is shooting for higher capacities. After reading some articles, this is the only advantage I see for Sony. A few articles have been poping up about the fact that current production lines need little updates for HD-DVD, hence cost savings and another was on HD-DVD-R media being feasable as well and could be available in 1st Quarter 2006.

Man I'm looking forward to having this type of drive in my lappy.

HD hasnt been out long enough and first generation burners are generally bad. As for Blue Ray its a better choice but I would wait for HD to be more refined. Just my opinion

vapourware till it comes out and then it's a FULL on war like vhs vs beta. No hurry, no software yet and not many projectors/rptv that can handle 1080p except the top range mega bucks Sony line. Just wait....so what's this got to do with Gen 2, maybe Gen 3 ? ...cheers.

I guess the bottom line in this developing war is just that, the bottom line. Afterall Beta gave you a better picture but VHS gave you more storage. HD-DVD is developing a triple layer disc with 45GB capacity. Also a drive with lazers to use all 3 wavelength standard spectrums.

With some manf. already gearing up for late 05' with HD-DVD. Our drives will be old news fast. NEC is working on that replacement for the 6500 series line as we speak. (write). Slim-line drive by next spring!

Gen 4?
gen 4, dual core, 64 bit with SLi, NAND HDD and new fuel cell battery that lasts for 5 hrs and HD-DVD...creaming my pants already...

64bit isn't gonna happen since Yonah isn't 64bit and Dell won't have AMD cpus.

who said the Gen 4 will be Yonah, if Dell keeps up the strategy of going with the gaming market, each subsequent Gen generation will have a new platform as proven by Gen 1: P4, Gen 2 PM so based on this, Gen 3 will probably be Yonah...

It's all speculation, of course...

Does anyone now what the resolution requirements are for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. I mainly ask this so that I know what resoltution notebook I need. I heard that WXGA+ would be enough but I also heard that Blu Ray and HD-DVD demand WUXGA. I know that you can scale down or whatever, but I need to know what is the official resolution for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

I really thing blu-ray will win the war out if they cant meet in the middle ground. Holds WAY more storage space and has the backing of nearly all the comp makers, and Sony obviously is a big movie element. Who knows though...

I'm just going to wait on the sidelines till the smoke clears. Already invested nearly $1.8K on a dvd player and now this...can never keep up with the tech, and then I will probably replace my DVD collection with the HD-DVD or whatever...sounds familiar...like the laserdiscs....ppppffffff.

Has anybody seen the 1920X1080P (WMVHD) Batman Begins preview? It played like a slideshow on my C610(P3M 1.0Ghz, ATI M1) but played smooth as silk on my XPS2. The sharpness of the video as just amazing... kinda like looking at a high res photo but it's moving. The file is like 170MB for a 3 minute preview.

... but Hollywood (except Sony BMG) is supporting HD-DVD at the moment. If they release movies on HD-DVD but not Blu-Ray, that will be that.

Personally I'd like to see Blu-Ray win too, because of the higher capacity and greater scalability. But the history of computers and consumer media format is littered with the carcasses of superior technology that were slaughtered by inferior opponents with better marketting and / or lower costs etc. (Betamax, laser disk, Apple vs. Windows vs. Amiga, OS/2 vs. Windows, Microchannel vs. ISA, the list goes on ad nauseum).

OK let me share what i was hearing a while ago (don't know how true it is now)....Blu-ray is using mpeg-2 which sucks but was preparing an 8-layer (200 GB) disc to be released in like 2008 or something...I'll look into the more recent developments later and share what i find out...cause Blu-ray isn't gonna be approved by DVD forum and HD-DVD is alot cheaper and less storage but the throughput of it allows it to hold longer movies (just keep in mind i read this along time ago)

My take...

This isn't exactly like Betamax vs. VHS--it's more like DVD-R vs. DVD+R.

We'll be seeing dual-format players not too long after the single-format players...

Oh, BTW: I understand both formats use blue lasers...is that right?

I figure it's best for me to get the WXGA+ model and then perhaps buy an external screen (that supports WUXGA) later and use DVI connection.

-Or- you could try to swap screens at a future date--I don't know how useful that would be to you, though.

Whomever came up with the name "Blu-Ray" should be shot though...
