Official Clevo D900K Countdown Thread - Page 35

Guys,
Re the single and dual CH memory differences, I read an indepth article about 4 mo ago when the X2 cpu's first were released for testing purely dealing with memory and if I recall correctly the diff between DDR and DDR2 was very small. They said the diff between 533 DDR2 on the Intels and 400 DDR on the AMDs was Only 1-3%. That was 1 reason AMD was not too worried about rushing to introduce it. They will be moving to 533 DDR2 on the next cpu releases next yr like the X2 5000? which is supposed to run each core at 2.6Mhz. Sorry I cant remember what site it was but I was particularly interested when I saw the article. If I can google and find it I will post the link. I will have to wait til next yr to buy my dual core lappy anyway so by then the newer cpu etc may be avail from Sager or a new platform to replace the D900 chassis.

I been following the status of this machine for such a long time now. I hate to say it, but it's gonna be virtually obsolete by the time it comes out, which will probably be next year. It's quite sad, this could have been amazing if it came out 6 months ago.
I don't think an amd 4800 or fx-57 with a 7800 go is obsolete anytime soon, but I do actually agree with you to an extent. For the money, this will be a big price tag and still will have a little trouble running the newest games at highest detail that are out today. I can't image UE 3 engine games being amazing on the system. If I am going to shell out 4k on a lappy, I want to get a pretty good return on my investment. I think people that are buying a system like this are pure gearheads An fx57/4800 with a 7800 go, people will want it to do one thing....Play on MAX settings. I know I am a little bummed when I cant play FEAR on max settings with my 8 month old Alienware fx-55 dual Ultra SLI rig. Call of Duty 2 is even worse! So I will probably hold off until I can get a next gen card that surpasses the best Desktop cards on the market right now because even those cards are havin ga little difficulty keeping max settings on TODAY's games:/

I just meant when you take into consideration size and cost, this machine becomes less attractive every day. Obviously it has monster specs, but justifying dishing out over $4k dimishes very quickly as other competing machines come to market that may not be as fast, but are much more powerful than they were 6 months ago.

I think a 2ghz Turion with a 7800go and wuxga screen is looking pretty nice now.

Yeah but if you always wait.... you'll always be waiting. (Yogi Berra, what a man!)

I'm so torn on this machine right now, it looks like it could be so good.

I agree, I've been waiting for this machine to be release for over a year now (ever since the 9860 was announced) But now its not nearly as compelling as it was when it was announced. I will still get one assuming the price point is right. But I'm dissappointed its taking as long as it is. That said, I'd rather have them take the time than rush it out before its ready.

I am also very sad about the constant release delay of this machine. It really looks so if Clevo is waiting so long till Intel keeps up with technology in form of the new Dualcore P-M processors (Yonah). The machine would still be a performance king, but there are competitive and lighter alternatives already available at the market right now (Clevo M570). Also the next Turion dualcore generation with DDR2 support is coming in near future and will give a performance boost in combination with low TDP. In my opinion a machine on base of this technologie would be a better choice in respect of mobility and size.

But it is laudable of Clevo that they designed an AMD based notebook with such specs. No other company pronounced an AMD based notebook with such performance potential.

Now I am thinking What would happen on the December release of Sager NP9750?
Would I still buy it or at least consider to buy it?

Looking at the progression of the post. The excitement and climax of having an AMD fully loaded and geared up for the future in the start of the forum.

And now to the plateau and downsizing of the features like the memory to single channel and the soon to be released more powerful laptop/processor?? like Yonah, etc...

I guess By December, all the excitement dies out...

The more so if they sell it at an outrageous price...

I am pretty sure there will be cheaper and much better alternatives...

If that is the case... WOULD YOU STILL BUY IT?

Your of course right about new laptops coming out, but I'm not sure how soon they will arrive. If its taking this long for the D900K, just imagine how long the processors (dual core for notebooks) will take to release. Like all of you, I want the best and fastest notebook around. I am disappointed that its taking so long, espesically when I already ordered one.

given the delays...does anyone have any advice on what to purchase right now. it is for graphics and rendering...
This AMD version could be great, but a Physics Processing Unit would be Icing on the cake.

Apparently there is a 512 meg version of the 7800gtx comming out this month (for the desktop) as well as these PPU's.

I would buy one of these machines in a heartbeat if it supported both of these things.

Just a question about the new Yonah and whatnot... if the cheap is finally RELEASED in 2-3 months from now... and it takes X months to design a laptop around the chip... should we expect a yonah based system within 5-6 months? Or do people like clevo and asus get production specs to have laptops ready for the chip's release?

I COULDN'T wait any longer, so I ordered the D900T from BOXX (their 2300 series mobile workstation) this week solely for 3D rendering and graphics.

Yonah should not take that long all notbook makers already know the specs of the chip and people like dell and maybe even clevo should release machines as soon as chips come on to the martket.
They are already making new lappy's and testing with the help of people like intel. (at least the big players like dell-ibm-HP etc)
the big delay with the D900k is that all componants cpu wise are made for desktops and not notebooks and therefore clevo has had to design from the ground up new parts as the desktop parts are all too large for their chasis.
(bar the gpu's)

The 4800+ should still beat yonah when its released at least in the first batch of yonah chips - 5-6 months on and 4800+ will be beat but thats always the way with technology.
If this machine had been released on time then the D900k would have been top-dog for a year.
one other note is that back in july when people were hyping this machine clevo were telling oems to be restrained as they knew july-aug would never be made and virtually always stated a an october date (so infact its only a 2 month delay and not a 6 month delay as it seems)

What do you mean by the 4800+? (Kinda new to AMD lingo) Is it the AMD on the sager NP9750 with dual core /FX processor?
Coz the processor I see listed in the sager website are
AMD Athlon™ 64
AMD Athlon™ 64 FX-55/57
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2

is there a particular reason you ordered the boxx and not the sager 9880, which seems to be the same?

the x2 comes in a number of "flavours", in this case the 4800+ is the highest clocked X2 at the moment.

Experience. Experience building workstation computers and knowing what components work best with other components. Also, the components are ceritfied for workstations.

It is the D900T, same as Sager, Voodoo, Alienware, Hypersonic, etc. Costs more I know.
