The bomb dropped, but was a dud.

Thank you all for your input and comments. PC Torque is the clear winner. Here is the system I am getting:

9750-C

17" WUXGA
4800+
Go 7800
1-512 (I'll put my own Corsair 2GB in)
80GB SATA 7200
DVD+R DL

All other options standard
=======
Cash price: $3,180.45 USD plus free shipping

BTW FX-60 to ship 1/10?

I for one agree. I've already spent $500 more than I wanted to; I can't see myself spending another $500 on top of that, especially since the FX-60 is going to be at least $1200 (see link). On the same hand, I don't want to send in my laptop a month after getting it because of a "compatibility issue".

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2005/10...ce_drop_fx_60/

Besides, it also says that people have been able to overclock their 4800+ fine to 2.6GHz, so I wonder if the premium for the FX-60 is worth it...

What about the warranty? They are a whole lot less than other manufacturers are. I got the 3 year extended; I figured if I'm spending more than $4K on a laptop, I might as well insure it for another $200.

Also, since my last laptop (that I RMA'd) had 2 dead and 1 partially lit pixel, I figured that I would throw down more for the guaranteed 0 Dead Pixels (but I definitely think that this is not as necessary as the 3-year warranty).

The bit tech article postesd by Jwolves reveals a new amd processor release this january 2006 will affect the price of its preceeding models...

If the current amd x2 4800+ will be replaced by january 2006 with amd x2 5000+, how much will be the price drop?

Will it be wise to wait till january 2006 (plus the fact that there is still no review of 9750 so bugs may still have to be worked out)

The choice of having a TV tuner on the 9750 in the other reseller is backordered till Feb...
Since the notebook will be coming from the main Sager , perhaps this applies to all resellers?
There is always a newer or cheapter tech around the corner, so you just have to judge your needs personally to see if you want to spend the money now or wait for a cheaper price.
the 9750 seems to be quite a sexy machine...

I'm not buying my 9750 until January anyway, so this is great news for me. So I may have to wait a few weeks before placing my order, but that's fine, that extra $200 is going to help pay for my 2GB of Corsair memory.

BTW, does anybody know what brand of memory Sager uses, or more particularly, what brand is used in the 9750s?

AMD Wins The Dual-Core Duel!

Competition (Intel ) Refuses to Step into the Ring; Industry Benchmarks Validate Victory Click here for details

This is TOO funny!

Top 10 Reasons Intel did not Participate in the Dual-Core Duel

10.Tried to follow their own roadmap to get to the duel

9.Decided to take the "front-side bus" to the duel; got stuck in a bottleneck

8.The "Intel Inside" stickers they used to package the cores together keep melting

7.Too busy rearranging the deck chairs on the Itanic

6."Hey, we don't expect anyone to actually buy these things!“

5.Didn't want to compete when they realized that the duel would involve actual "rules" of fair competition

4.They couldn't get a permit from the fire department to emit that much heat

3.No systems available yet --protective clothing used by manufacturers only safe for up to 149 watts

2. Dell told them they weren't allowed to participate

And the number one reason Intel didn’t accept the dual-core duel:

1. Moore's Law has been replaced by "Paul's Paradox": the number of canceled products per year at Intel will double every year after the introduction of the AMD Opteronâ„¢processor.

Top 10 Reasons

So much for Future Proofing: AMD preps for M2 launch in April 2006.

In April of next year, AMD will be releasing the next line of its series of CPUs, including DDR2-supporting processors and chipsets. Roughly 25% of AMD's volume by the second half of next year will be DDR2-based, as the M2 socket is slowly phased in over the next year. The M2 will be the desktop version of the socket, with the server variety for Opteron being Socket F, and the mobile variety being Socket S1, so at first there seems to be no possibility of interchanging desktop and mobile CPUs, unlike some current situations today. How the release of the next gen socket will affect the prices of 939 motherboards and CPUs isn't clear, but ultimately it will lead to a reduction in the cost of 939 based solutions. The release for both desktop and mobile platforms is expected to be around the same time.

Luke, say I dont buy the OS from PCT, will you still ship the drivers? Also, if I buy the OS, will we get a OEM CD or a full system recovery CD including OS and drivers?

A general question - how hard is installing a OS for a laptop from scratch and also how hard is configuring the SATA drives?

Thanks

I think folks at PCT are swamped right now...

If you get the machine "naked", it comes with drivers for all the hardware.
If you've done lots of OS installs, you shouldn't have trouble.
If you haven't you may be better off buying it preinstalled.

Don't know what they do with OS restore... Got mine without OS.

Erh...mobo change, prolly there will be 8800GTX GPU out by then as well or the latest ATI GPU and everyone will be upgrading. At least, as records have shown, you can do this upgrade with the Sager 9xxx series for a price.

According to some threads here almost no one has upgraded the video on the 9860 to the 7800GTX. Reason is that it requires a new motherboard, new power supply and a new video card. The whole upgrade costs $1,000.

thats right - for a price. if i remember right, i've seen posts by people where they'll wait for the next card or they're happy with it since it will still play their current games. however, the point is that it can be done for a price and abliet a small discount from sager as versus purchasing a new machine for double that amount, at least.

Now i wonder if AMD goes full socket m2, will sager offer a mobo upgrade..??!?

I was browsing the different resellers of the 9750. They have different promos

Saw Discountlaptops offering repair transit coverage for 1st year and a 2 year extended warranty.

Powernotebooks have 3 years extended warranty and comes standard with arctic silver compound. (for overclocking)
PCtorque also have 3 year extended warranty but does NOT come with arctic silver compound.

I understand having repair transit coverage will relieve you of the trouble of paying for the shipping cost esp for a new release. Bugs may still have to be worked out for the neophyte laptop. In case you need repair, this will provide for the shipping cost since as written in Sager manufacturer warranty, the user covers the shipment going to them and Sager pays shipping by ground.
This option is one detour to the roadblocks warranty providers give to prevent or delay return of defective laptops. Albeit there are many stories of stalling on laptop repairs.

The arctic silver as I read in one of the posts here keeps the processor cool and thus faster.
As I understand, opening your laptop and putting the arctic silver will VOID the sager manufacturer warranty and the extended warranty unless of course the reseller put it themselves.

Would be excellente If PCTorque will bring back their Repair transit coverage and comes standard with arctic silver compound also.

That would really be the deal breaker.
A RETAIL version of Windows MCE 2005, win xp professional and X64bit (or VISTA) would be an additional plus...
OEM versions sold by the resellers have a disadvantage. It CAN'T be installed in other computer. If you buy on retail store, then you LOSE the lifetime technical support offered by the reseller. So having the best of both worlds is for resellers to sell retail version.

All of these units ship directly from Sager, they are no different. Which means that ours have AS5 as well, we just though listing it in our system builder looked corny.

As far as the shipping coverage, the coverage is the cost to ship the unit back to Sager once. The only time the shipping coverage saves you any money is when you ship your system back multiple times... I guess we just have a little more faith in Sager than others, that and when we offered the coverage less then 5% of our users used it for the 1st time let alone a 2nd.
