Hey, I just ordered my first ever laptop, the z63a, and i was wondering if any of you had any suggestions on good laptop security locks.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks a bunch

you know what the locks can and can't do for you, right?? if you don't, search the forums.... since it's your first laptop, I would even say that you may not know...

does anyone own that laptop lock? It looks like it would be awfully easy to cut the cable with a pair of bolt cutters.

A laptop lock is simply a deterrent stopping a opportunistic snach and grab thief. Don't depend on it as the end all means of keeping your laptop safe. Use common sense and always keep an eye on your machine and properly store it safely when you're away.

exactly what i meant, rustican!!! As I told here once, "It only keeps honest people honest".

this issue was discussed over and over again on this forums...

I just saw that lock today (OfficeMax sells it for $20 after a $10 mail in rebate) but I was cautious about someone breaking that plasticy looking shell and then just slipping the cable through whatever you tied it around. Besides, with those measely 3 tumblers it's only a matter of time (only 999 combinations) before someone could unlock it, taking both it and the laptop.

One, the kensington barrel locks can be picked using a toilet paper tube, here is a link with a video:

Any of the motion sensor locks that have an alarm are not very loud (hold your hand over the speaker and i doubt anyone will hear) and can be easily defeated my submerging it in a glass of water.

I just picked up a PC Guardian Notebook Guardian Ultra lock, see here:

The cable is twice as thick, one review noted it took over ten minutes to saw through using a hacksaw, compared to 30 seconds or less for the standard kensington. Also, not susceptible to picking, and is harder to pry. Prying is probably on of the biggest weakness of laptop locks. Stick a screwdriver in between to laptop and lock, and pull. But, this lock takes measures to prevent this. I can post what i think about it when it arrives, bought it off amazon.

I would buy a lock and keep an eye on it. I wonder if you can get one with an electronically-secured key?
