Thinking about buying 700m...

OK, now that Dell has the $750 off coupon for laptops over $1500, I am really tempted to buy a 700m to tag team with my 9300. I have some questions tho.

1. How heavy is laptop with the 8-cell battery?
2. How long does the laptop last for DVD movie with the 8-cell battery? I prob will replace my 7in portable DVD player with this while travelling.
3. How long with wifi on (and off) is laptop with 8-cell battery? I will use it alot at the free wifi hotspots in my area.
4. How good is laptop for basic gaming? I understand its not as powerful as my 9300 but what games can it play well at decent graphics setting?
5. The HD is really 4200rpm?? You'd think by now the slowest HDs would be 5400...

TIA (Posted in XPS2/9300 forum, but I'd like more responses...thx)

1. 4.7lbs, i believe
2. about 5 hours. I can play two DVD's on one charge with no problem
3. I get between 5 - 6 hours depending upon usage
4. Not many
5. Upgrade to the 5400rpm drive

mine came with 5400 RPM

mine came with a 5400rpm too.

also for the gaming, it will play some older games just fine. Dont get me wrong it obvioulsy isnt a gaming machine, but I installed GTA vice city (I know its two years old) and it plays it just fine, I hear call of duty runs great on it too. They might be old but those are two badass games.

Halo runs good . That's the only game i've loaded on mine. I think BFV would probably run ok, RTCW, so on and so forth.

Thanx for the responses. I have a few more questions.

1. Does the 8-cell battery stick outside of the laptop or does it fit inside of it on the bottom of laptop? Hopefully that makes sense...
2. Which case do you recommend?
3. I am thinking of just getting the 1.6 proc. Is that fast enough?

The 8-cell battery sticks out the back of the laptop about 1.25". It's really not so bad. Makes a nice handhold if you are carrying the lappy while it's open and running. The standard battery sticks out the back as well, but not nearly as far.

the 4 cell sticks out of the back as well

Dell will only guarantee that a 4200RPM drive will come with the laptop, but it seems like most of the drives coming out now are 5400RPM.

1.6 is fast enough

I chatted with Dell support about a couple of months ago (the convo was posted too) - Anyway, he guaranteed that they do now come with 5400rpm. He said the website is wrong and that it needs to be updated.

Thanx for the responses. I bought the 700m with the following spex:

Price $765
Inspiron 700mIntel® Pentium® M Processor 725 (1.60 GHz/400MHz FSB), 12.1-in WXGA, 256MB DDR SDRAM 1 Dim, 60 GB Hard Drive, Windows® XP Home,
CD ROM/DVD ROM8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer write capability, Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps)
65 WHr 8-cell Lithium Ion Battery, 1Yr Ltd Warranty, 1Yr At-Home Service, and 1Yr Technical Support

My credit card will double the warranty for free. This is a great deal. Amazon sells the samsung 12" portable DVD player $639! The 700m should have better battery life for DVDs and weigh about the same as the DVD player.

Congrats man, I got a smiliar machine but I opted for a 3 year warranty just in case. Also, the HD specs says its 5400 rpm but I'll check it manually when I get it.

Is it possible to OC the 1.6 400 mhz?
I thought that Win XP needed 512MB RAM to run smoothly.
Win XP needs 256 MB minimum to run along with a couple of low-intensive RAM programs.

1.6 is more than enough. with most systems now, 700m included, the GPU/RAM will always be the bottleneck. Unless you want a high benchmark score so you can show off your internet penis, yeah, it "depends".
