Okay, this may be vague but....

Thread Starter
I'm looking to build a new system for personal gaming, but I have a ~$1500 budget. I'm wondering which processor type would be a good choice to build a system around. I'm looking for speed and a good amount of longetivity. Would the AMD be able to support my desires? Which AMD should I choose (If you suggest AMD)?

I understand this may seem vague, but any help would be awesome.

Thanks so much,
Tom

the system i have now, built from existing parts that i had (keyboard & mouse, mouse, monitor, dvd drive, and cd-rw drive, and a ti4200(sitting around the house)) only cost $350

i bought:

amd 2500+ barton
asus a7n8x
volcano 10+
mid-sized case with a 420W PS
52X CD-rom (so my old computer was usable)

i overclocked my 2500+ to a 3200+ and it is running 10 degrees C lower than my friends at idle temp, and when i game it runs at the same as his idle. (35 C idle, 45 gamming/ movies)

the mobo is just awsome, and the volcano 10+ just keeps everything so cool and it is quiet too. the vid card is up to you, i would wait until hl2 comes out to see if any new vid cards come out before, and if not go for the 9800 or you can just get the 4200 now and play anygame you want fully jacked up.

if you have anymore questions (probably do since my post didn't say much) just go ahead and ask meh, i rox0r at building computers

for 1500 i configered a desktop with a athlon 64 bit(not the fx) i went to http://www.zipzoomfly.com and just got all the parts i needed and it came out to like 1,496.But if you are looking for a new monitor then maybe this isnt the best route.

yo, if you go to http://discuss.futuremark.com there are some really smart people there. They know so much about computers, and they taught me how to build a computer when I didn't know the difference between SDRAM and DDRAM

P.S. I'm not saying the people here arent smart.

Won't it be wonderful when we all can do this type of thing with a laptop instead? My guess is about 3 to 4 years. Hopefully less as the desktop components get smaller and the laptop components get more available.

You can get older model laptop motherboards. But I haven't found anything for a P4 or similar capacity. And, of course, that's it, you get the motherboard with the everything but the CPU integrated and often that too.

Some brands still hold really tight and you would have to create a laptop repair company to get them to ship you the parts. If P4 type mobos were available, maybe it would be worth it.
