help with the very first steps on linux

Thread Starter
I have got my self a HP ze2150EA a few days now. I have installed XP home the very first time I opened my notebook. Now I want to try linux without messing with the windows installation. I have various CDs/DVDs from computer magazines with linux isos.
The question is: do I need to create a partition for my HDD in FAT32 for linux? And how do I do that? If I download the partition magic 8 trial can it do that? Then I just reboot my laptop with a linux CD in the drive and follow the steps windows-installation-style or is more steps involved in-between?

Linux actually runs on its own kind of partition, usually ext2 or ext3, though some like reiser. The only real reason you'd want a fat32 partion would be to make a common partiton to share data between your linux and windows installs.

What you'll probably want to do is resize your windows partion to make room for linux, 10 gigs or so for a new linux user would be a good size. Most linux partition managers in the installer should be able to handle this, if not do a google for FIPS.

Once you have your new resized partiton, just boot to the linux ISO, have it format and partion the new 10 gig block you created, make sure you have at the very least / and /swap partitons, and from there you should be set to go. Post again if you have any more questions.
