Dell Is Now Charging $10 For Backup CDs!

Dell is now charging $10 for the backup Windows CD when you configure a i600m, i700m, and i6000. I just went to Dell and found out about it by trying to configure a system even though I already receive my new laptop 2 weeks ago. They do not have the option available for the 9300, so I guess you 9300 owners can still get it for free. I bet if you purchase a 600m, 700m, or 6000 you can still get them for free by requesting them through email. Is this a coincidence or not? Last week I asked for the backup CD and driver CD through email. 2 days later I got them, FREE! I think that Dell loses money (albeit small) by shipping the CDs. I think the $10 is just to cover the shipping costs of the CDs since I think they ship them with 2-day shipping.

You should also know that now they charge $19 of handling. Hmm. No shipping but $19 handling? Sounds like bait and switch to me.

It's now an option on the 9300s

It's not bait and switch because they tell you up-front about it. Here is what it says officially...

"Get FREE (3-5 Day) Shipping with many new Dell PCs purchased ONLINE. $19 Handling charge may apply"

After paying 119 dollars for an operating system, I dam well expect to have a CD sent to me with NO EXTRA CHARGE.
Sounds to me like we need to contact the Better Business Bureau or the Federal Trade Commission about this.

THATS OUTRAGEOUS!!! Im contacting the Federal Trade Commission RIGHT NOW

IF Dell had put the DAM CD in the box with your laptop like any ethical company would, they wouldnt have to worry about the shipping in the first place. It's an outrage that they treat the consumer in this manner and believe you me they are profiting from it.

OMG that's horrible. I'm so glad I was lucky and got my XP CD with my system as well as a couple software CDs. I can deal with downloading drivers. I think Dell should never have stopped putting all the CDs in the box with the new systems.

Hmm... hopefully this shows up with my 700m, or I'll be pissed. I ordered it last night and it is already in Boxing.

Go ahead and email or call customer care that you would like the XP and drivers CDs when your computer comes. Hopefully you will not have to pay for them.

Chatting with them right now, they're telling me I will not receive an OS disc. I'm still in the chat, hopefully i can find some way to get this resolved... I'll post with what I find.

Luckily I ordered all the stuff I needed from Dell before they started charging tax, handling, and all these other crazy things. They're really tightning their little ship now. Time to jump ship and find another company for my next notebook.

OK, things went better as I talked to him. I basically told him I was disappointed and that this was kind of rediculous, saying that while I don't want to cancel my order, I also don't want to be sent on a wild goose chase for an OS disc. We talked for a few minutes and he surprised me saying he would go ahead and get the disc for me, and assured me that the disc will be sent on the day my laptop ships so it should arrive on or before the day my 700m actually arrives. He also is sending me some discs from my i9100 that I lost for free as a service gesture, which I appreciated.

I'm satisfied now, though I wish I hadn't had to go through that. I'm personally very disappointed that Dell has implemented this policy of not shipping an OS disc with their systems. Now, hopefully mine actually does show up.

My system, ordered on 7/14, is already in boxing. Anyone know about how long it takes to ship after that point? Scheduled ship date is not until the 25th, will the send it before then? I got one of the first i9100 laptops, so my laptop was delayed for about a month back then so I really don't know what to expect from Dell in terms of an "on time" order.

boxing will be about 3-4days, at the end of which, your laptop will ship....your lappy will most likely arive well before the estimated dates

Thanks, because when I ordered my 9100 it was in build for over 2 weeks, testing for a day and then boxing for 2 weeks before it shipped. Granted, all of the iXPS and i9100s that were first build had that problem, but as a result it has given me a skewed perception.

Dell seems to have things backwards. I'm the person in charge of ordering for a university department. I get Windows XP CD's with my system every time. Yet, I don't need them because we have our own site licensed official XP cd. I honestly have 25 windows XP pro cd's sitting in a desk in my office. Seems like a bit of a waste.

this is ridiculous. you pay over 1000$ for a laptop (os also). and they want additional moneys to create a disc for you, that cost what, 2$ to make?

dell is changing for the worse. give them a few years, they will be a compaq.

i have always had dells for the last several years with laptops. i have noticed small declines in there business ethics.

if they told me i had to pay for my OS cd (whcih i got for free), i would simply say that is ridiculous, and return the computer.

consumers have rights (:
20$ isnt a lot of money compared to the 1000$ you spend on the computer, but its the principle.

I'm wondering how much Micrsoft has to do with this sort of thing. MS is getting to the point where they dont want anyone to have any kind of copy of their software. Supposedly due to piracy and whatnot. Basically they want the PC vendors to sell you a system with your choice of O/S and then thats it. The way MS has been talking lately you wont see O/Ses for sale in retail anymore if they get their way. Kinda sucks Dell is charging for a disk.

A customer should get it free as part of the package without being asked IMO. Hopefully they'll get a big backlash over it but my guess is that MS is encouraging them to not give them out at all. Free or not.
