Hi everybody. I was selling a new Dell 600m that i recently from my bro. Before I do I was wondering if the video card in it is upgradeable. Right now its a M9 64 meg. I'm just curious as to if it can be. Thanks for al the support in advance.

Upgrades

Typically, Video Cards in laptops are not upgradeable.

Most are soldered on the mainboard somewhere.

However, not sure if this is the case for you or not...

ATI has been making some swappable Radeon cards for laptops. I had heard a rumor that some Dells are being designed with that very feature set included.

I would recommend you check out Dell tech support (or lack thereof) and see what you can find. In the meantime, I will do some digging to see what I can turn up.

Dell 600m

I did a bit of digging and could find no reference to the 600M being upgardeable. I would highly doubt that it is, since it is a Centrino processor. Upgradeability, in a laptop is usually seen (or most likely) in a ultra high end laptop. Something like the 8600 series laptops from Dell.

Well thank you so much for all your help. You really helped me out. If i might ask one more question. Are the pentium M processors really all that. I've read reviews but lets face it people will talk up a product to sell it. Since i've had it for a fiew days in need more time to research and was just wondering if you had any info onhand. Thanks again for all your help. You rock!

Pentium M Processors

Pentium M processors are pretty damn good for their application. They save power and offer pretty good performance.

I would say that they pretty much exceed anything that is equivalent in clock speed to them like athlons and PIII's, celerons, and low end P4's. This is primarily due to the insane 1 meg of l2 cache.

However, when looking at HT P4 models you are looking to get smacked around by 2.6+ Gig processors that are backed by dual channel memory.

All in all, the M's are good for the battery life and clock for clock performance.

Wow thanks. I've actually played C&C generals and it played smooth. It feels like the cpu throttles up from 600 mhz to 1.6 in real time with no lag. Thanks for all the info.

Not a Problem, anytime.

See im not sure if the centrinos are that much weaker when it came to doing some video conversions (.vob to divx) took my 1.7 centrino 2 hours to convert an entire movie took my room mate with his area 51 (no HT @ 3.06) almost 5 hours... i think theres something seriosuly wrong with his rig.

Actually from what ive seen so far like jktiberius said the level 2 cache plays a big role. Plus the M supposedly uses the best of PIII and P4. Also to Jkt is it bull when they say a M 1.7 can hold its onw agains a P4 2.6. Ive seen benchmarks but im doubtfull. It was from anandtech a pretty good source.

P4 2.6 Shootout

I am thinking that it is quite possible in a great many applications. The cache is the deciding factor here. With double what the Northwood core has to offer, certain applications will absolutely thrive. I think that when Hyper Threading and dual cahnnel support come into play the P4 starts to pull away.

With the Centrino, you are looking at certain games Kicking @$$ and others that are more Floating Point dependent not performing as well. I'm not saying it's got a poor floating point just that the 3.2 will smack it around.

This thread brings up an interesting dilemna for me as I am looking for a laptop to be used as a desktop replacement. I want to wait for the P4 EE (3.2 Gig with 2 meg of level 3 cache). It is just that it's so damn expensive. The laptop I saw with it in it was looking to be 5K+. But the centrino will offer me bad assed gaming and office application performance (Cache). Along with battery life that if great.

Not sure yet, but I think I will wait a while more before upgrading. I want my next laptop to last for a while.

Good point on waiting cause 5k is a lot. I wont lie the liitle badboy can handle anything ive thrown at it so far so its better than good. Plus i ran 3d mark 2001 and almost got a 7000 not bad at all.
