Yes, that is it. However, it will load up with all the bloatware that Dell puts on there. Basically, it restores your computer back to how you got it right out of the box. So for you, there's really no point in making it right now. If you're talking about doing a clean install, then you need to get the CD from Dell.

It's not true. No bloatware if you use self-created restore CD. Just XP and drivers preinstalled when you first got it. Other Dell installed software (bloatware or not) will be gone.

If you use restore porgram (Norton) by pushing F11 or F12??? before XP start up, it will restore with bloatware. This restore function basically reinstall everything from that HIDDEN partition.

Are you sure this is the case? Have you done a clean install using the self-created restore CD? I keep getting conflicting information. I can't make a CD right now because my order for a cakebox of Taiyo Yudens is on backorder right now. However, I did speak to a CC rep and told me that she will send out the OS CD.

Yes, that is exactly right. The restore cd that you make via the start menu is just bare oem xp with the necessary dell drivers integrated. The norton system restore partition includes all the bloatware. You will have to reboot your machine once after you first get into windows before the create restore disk option will show up in start menu. the option disapears after you have created the disk.

I've burned the OS CD created with the Dell utility. It is just the OS & drivers, as JulienDogg correctly states. I've used it to delete & create parts, format, install xp, etc.

How many CDs does it take to make the OS disk from the Dell Accessories function?
^Only 1. Mine is 580Mb (i9300).

ok then, just to clarify,

if you create your own xp cd from the start menu, you dont really need to get an xp cd sent to you from Dell?
so when u do that its got the dell drivers?
i was told when u format u need to redownload the drivers and install them

Yeah, no need. At least I didn't bother with it. But I did make a (backup) copy of the CD, just in case.

No, the XP install CD that you burn with the Dell utility has all of the drivers. But you may want to upgrade some of them after the install.

What drivers exactly? Yes, I know this may seem like a dumb question, however, i just want to make sure i dont go through all this trouble of reinstalling, when there is still bloatware on my machine!

to ease your concerns, no, there is deffinately NO bloatware on the xp cd, as i reformatted using mine. Also, you will still want to get the drivers off the dell website to make sure you have the most currnt versions.

The drivers for the hardware installed on your particular system.

No bloat, except for all of the crap that comes with the usual XP install.

For the folks having this problem: I guess Dell isn't putting the shortcut to this utility in the start menu for some systems. I just bought my parents a desktop and wanted to set it up for them (starting off with a clean installation).

I didn't have the shortcut either but after a little searching I found the utility. Check in C:\Dell\MEDIAEXE\ and doubleclick the icon "ODM (Dell OS Recovery CD)", it'll prompt you to insert a blank disc and Ouila!, you've got your disc (just make sure you either get the latest drivers from the dell site first and burn them to disk/usb drive, etc. or that you have another computer to obtain them with).

I don't have a Mediaexe folder in the Dell folder.
