A way to make an xp cd? - Page 2

I just got my i9300 today and I have no way to make the cd, I cant find the utility anywhere

Same deal with my 700m. I just called them and they're sending me CD's although being able to make my own would of been nice.

If you want my advice - just call them ASAP and get your CD's.

I just got my laptop yesterday and I do not have the utility either. Luckily the OS utility that I used to make the CD off of my parents desktop accepted the serial number given for my laptop.

I was about to dial in to Dell to request my discs but luckily I'm set.

I got them today and I called yesterday. They air-mailed it. =)

Umm, isn't making an XP CD kind of like, illegal?

I thought only Microsoft could do that.

He's not making an actual XP CD that he's going to sell. If you legally own XP you are entitled to as many copies as you want for BACKUP purposes.

Plus, the Dell CP CD's aren't even "real" XP CD's.

Yup. They are surreal XP CDs.

So I'm confused. Is it still possible to make an OS CD from the software that comes with Dell laptop's now? Or have they in fact removed the utility that lets you do it and will I have to use something like the one Section31 mentioned?

If you have the utility then you can make one. It's by far the best solution because the drivers are slipstreamed with XP.

I just ordered 2 Dell systems recently, an i700m and a d4700. Neither of them had the utility so I called Dell and got the CD's. Getting the CD's isn't that bad, you just have to install the drivers manually but at least you get the updated ones.

I think DELL is charging for it now. There is some option when configuring a laptop that costs $9 for OS CD's.
They're NOT charging for them. You will get an invoice for it for tracking purposes but the person I talked to said to ignore the charges and that they won't be charged to my credit card.

You will be charged for the backup disc. It is a $10 upgrade.

I just today received my i9300 and refrained from selecting the $10 OS CD option because I was under the impression that I would be able to backup the CD and perform a clean install regardless (using Dell Accessories). However, when I first booted up the laptop (with the intent of going about a clean install), not only was there nothing present in Dell Accessories besides my tracking info, but I didn't have a MEDIAEXE folder. After a prolonged amount of time on the phone with Dell tech support, I was able to convince the guy to mail me a CD.

Seeing as this appears to be a problem only for people with recently purchased laptops (and considering that the $10 charge for the is a relatively new "feature" I believe), it would make sense that they've simply disabled any other method of acquiring a backup CD; since they pre-load so much other garbage onto every laptop, I doubt that this is some sort of oversight.

Getting charged $10 for a CD you can make on your own is really stupid.

I just told them that I had no way of making a backup CD and they sent me the OS, Drivers, and Apps CD's. Took maybe 5 minutes.
Can one of you with the program upload it for us?

ABS can you please tell me how you contacted them about this?

I have the same problem, I dont have the program to create a backup.

I called DELL and they keep transferring me to other people. I tried the chat help and it says my comp isnt a home computer when in fact it really is. One of the reps said i would have to pay $60 for software warranty which I doubt I need. Another rep hung up on me, literally.

I am really frustrated with this service.

Yeah! Same here, I tried chatting and it would say I am not a home or home office customer. Wth. I bought the laptop under Home & Home Office, so what is the deal?

So we gotta pay $60 to Chat???

Any Dell Canada customers have any recent experience to back this up? And would we call customer care or tech support to convince someone to send us out a FREE OS CD?
