Envy M:460

Wow...My first post.

So, I need a new laptop. And after some searching, and violent arguments with the people closest to me, I have pretty much decided on the Voodoo Envy M:460. Don't worry, my next choice was a Sager 8890.

But after some questioning about the 60 waiting period before they can deliver, I've recieved some very cryptic answers. All I have determined is that they are changing something about it POSSIBLY involving the video-card...and that's all I know.

does anyone know anything about this?

Ehhh...

Voodoo is a cool company, I like their case design and they are good quality. However, you are looking at a long wait period on their laptops due to a "special" LCD Screen that is "supposedly" way better than the competition. They have to special order it.

It is 25 ms, while the Sager models are 30 ms. It really doesen't make a signifigant difference. It's just a selling point for them to screw you out of more money.

Look at the price difference between Laptops ordered from PC Torque vs. Voodoo PC. I will guarantee you, that you will save an @$$load of money with PC Torque. I haven not been able to find a less expensive, better tech supporting vendor anywhere.

the 460 is an awesome laptop ive used it the 2.4 ghz pentium 4 it was configured with is nice and having a radeon 9600 64mb for such a light weight machine is cool but my friend waited almost a month an da half to get his and he blew nearly 3.5k on it while i spent 40% less on a Dell 8600 which is faster in everyway. other than that i can reccomend the apple ti book which lately ive used at the office and the new model with the rad 9600 kicks ass when you use the windows emulation software

I do a lot of travelling, which is the main reason that I need something as light and thin as a Voodoo, but also with the power I need to game.
Also, what about the things they say about them being upgradeable...are Sagers as upgradeable?

Uhhh...Upgradeable....

There is something you should know.

Clevo is the OEM manufacturer for many laptops including:

Alienware, Voodoo, Sager, PowerPC (not the processor), etc.

All of the laptops are fundamentally the same, just remarketed - relabeled - and severely marked up.

PC Torque is probably the most reasonable of them all. I have not been able to find a distributor that sell for less.

So to answer your question:

Yes, the Sager models are just as upgradeable as the Voodoo Laptops, because they are the same laptops without the heinous markup.

I have the I8600 and all I can say is AweSOme, but i suggest configuring one with the WUXGA display because DVDs will not run properly on the WSXGA+ screen and Dell offers no solutions for the problem. This is causing a big dilemna for me. I am either going to return mine and reconfigure another with the WUXGA display beacuase Dell is offering a similiar promotion to the one when I ordered or I am going to order a 15" Apple Powerbook with my edu discount because there is a 20 day delay on the I8600 WUXGA display and beacuse the SeXy aesthetics of the Powerbook are seducing me. What do u guys think I should do?

BTW Apple does not have a gaming library.

Humm?

I don't know man...

As a rule of thumb I always steer clear of Crapintosh/Power Mac machines. Just due to the amazing lack of variety in software (Namely games).

However, if it rubs your noodle the right way...who am I to say the Mac is not the one for you. BTW the Mac laptops do look sexy.

It really boils down to what functionality you need RIGHT NOW.

PC Clones will always have the majority of the software first.

Mac owners will always be waiting for software to come out for their machines. Also note that several security flaws that cannot be circumvented have made themselves apparent in OSX. Apple recommends that you ditch the OSX OS and upgrade to Panther or some $hit with a cat like name in it. There is no known fix for OSX.

I do have a destop at home to play games, but unfortunatly it inevitabley has to be upgraded, something I did not want to do immediatley, but if I got an apple I would. No notebook will run a game as well as a destop, mainly becsuse of heating issues that are present in all ntebooks.

The upgrade on the 460 involves the Processor and Ram support, not the video card. The card should stay the same, just with better thermals, and the 2.6 P4M will become a PM, which will eventually be a Dothan. The machine will be ready to ship in December.

I'd say, if that's what you're looking for, and you're going to go Voodoo, go with their M855 (AMD 64 model) It's been competitive in gaming and business use with the 800MHZ FSB laptops with a 3.2. The battery life is also like that of a centrino, for a desktop replacement. Check it out.

PCTorque is also the only other company that will offer you the level of tech support and customer service that voodoo will. They also have an unmoderated forum similar to this one, which is also great for support. They will cost you alot more than a similarly equipped Sager book, but they'll back it up too. It's a matter of preference, really.
