Ethernet Says Drivers not there

Thread Starter
I just got my 5680 and it was all fine at first, and everything was working, i turned it off for the night, and yesterday when i turned it on the ethernet controller came up with a ? and an exclamation mark over it, and the drivers were supposedly not there or no good, i reinstalled them a few times and let it reboot and it still didnt work, which i think is rather odd, then i cut it off and started it back up and it was working, said the drivers were fine and all that good stuff. Then after I put it up for the night last night and woke up this morning the same thing happened, and I went through the same procedure, and kept on reloading them rebooting ect. but then when i cut it off all the way it started working, and i was wondering what i can do to solve this , im not sure if it will pop up again but i think that it might since it has happened twice already. Anybody else have this problem, or know what to do to fix it, im using the drivers from the disc that shipped with it, im not sure if it is a driver problem or if it is a software problem, any help would be appreciated.

Never seen that before. You can check the HD for any issues or a virus, but I'd just reload the OS to save hours of troubleshooting.

I'm wondering if it's a faulty e-net chip? Some intermittent problem that either causes the chip to not be there, then be there - which would wreak havoc with the auto-detect feature of Windows.

Or perhaps the drive is having issues (as Adam pointed out). Intermittent problems are the worst, as it is hard to predict when they happen to establish patterns for troubleshooting.

Lots of things have controllers, and if a controller goes bad (even sporadically or infrequently) it's a tough situation to troubleshoot.

PS: Oh, the final, mandatory, question: DID you install anything recently? DO you have Windows Update set to AUTO?

It did it again this morning, i had just gotten the computer installed all my games, // all the drivers ect, but the first thing to go on was Norton Antivirus with Internet security so I dont have a virus, I do have windows update on auto, could that be a problem? I'm pretty sure the hd is fine, but i have no way of telling whether or not it has problems but this is the only problem i have had with the computer so far lol, lol i just loath having to reload the os because of how long it took to install all of the stuff i have on here now, Halo, Final Fantasy XI *takes lots and lots of time* and all of the other stuff i have put on, is there some new drivers that someone could point me to perhaps?

If you have autoupdate ON, then first, turn it OFF, then go into System Restore and go back a point or two.

Often, I've seen the autoupdate update a driver and screw up something else (usually unrelated)...

Getting Frustrated

The exact same problem has affected my 5680 since i got it. I reinstalled win xp pro 3 times using factory driver disc, doenst work, dont waist your time reinstalling everything. I've been noticing this problem come up in this forum for someone new every week for the past month. Still no resolution. Think we'd have to send these back. Adam i emailed you before with the same problem so it isnt new. i'll track down all the others with the same problem and see if they got it solved, i dont think they have. If the only solution is sending it back, sager would have to furnish me with a replacement in the meantime.

Just got my 5680 3 days ago and have been having the same problem. Everytime I leave it powered down for any amount of time it will loose the ethernet driver, then refuse to recognize and load the driver. usually after a few shutdowns and start-ups it will load the driver and work fine until the next time the system is left off.
Anyone find a fix for this?

Seeing the same issue on my friend's 5680. He's already RMA'ed in the first 5680 they sent him so sending this one back would suck. Anyone hear of a solution yet?

No fix yet but I can tell you what I've done so far.

First, I have been in touch with sager tech and they don't have an answer. Said it was the first they had heard of it but would look into it.

If I do not search an go to the Have Disc option and load driver, it will give message that driver doesn't match hardware.

I load driver anyway and everything looks fine-then i get a message that my network cable is unplugged(its not).

If at that point I go into control panel and set speed to 10Mbps Half Duplex(a network fix in other thread)it will show cable as being plugged in but I don't get any transfer,no internet-nothing.

At this point I try to let windows repair network connection. It will fail and say I have to contact my network admin. Everything looks OK but it doesn't work.

I have done this with sager disc drivers and latest ones from reltek. Same result.

Just an idea, try to uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" on the power management page of the driver in device manager. See if that helps. You probably also have some wakeup/power savings settings under the advanced page you can fiddle with.

Yep tried that already-thanks anyway

Hmm.... dont like how all these people are having the issue. I havent had the issue on my 5680 and it has been serving me for almost 2 months. Ive been mostly using my Linksys Wireless-G PCMCIA card but every time I wanted to use Ethernet it has worked flawlessly with the drivers off the CD. I even tried out the beauty of Gigabit with Syndicat3; we connected our lappys through cross-over and they pumped stuff through at an average of 150Mbps - the peak of the hard drives (that works out to about 19MB/sec, which is what Sandra gave me for my HD; we both have the 60gig 5400rpm's).

The quick fix for this only lasts one day, or so but its better than nothing, dont worry about uninstalling the drivers or anything, just reinstall drivers, SHUT DOWN the computer fully and restart, it should last most of the day, I hope I do not have to send mine in, because I had to wait for 2 months just to get the settlement from my car accident to replace the lappy that was there, then i had to wait another week for the money to get in the bank, then i spent 15 bucks to wire the money, and spent whatever it is for 1 day shipping, it would be ridiculous to have to send it back and wait another week, when i had to pay for the shipping going the first time. We need to make sure this is known to them and make sure we get it fixed properly!

1 day fix

As soon as i get the found new hardware dialoge box i press the power button. Windows shuts down, i quickly press it again (waiting too long will cause it to rediscover when you boot) Problem solved until the next morning. I am in contact with Sager who said that what we all have in common is that we got our systems without an OS. Suggests that either we all made the same installation mistakes (which i doubt) or that Sager has to modify their installation instructions and/or drivers. BTW, sagers sending me a new harddrive with windows xp pro pre-configured on it. They'll switch the product ID to the one i own and i'll mail my current harddrive back to them upon receiving the new one. They just hold my credit card info as insurance. Much Much better than RMAing!

Well my problem has seemed to change. It no longer searchs for a driver at start-up,now when it starts(or comes out of stand-by)it shows the cable as being unplugged.
If I uninstall it and restart it will load on its own and work fine until the next time I bring it out of stand-by or restart.
Also I went out and got a PCMCIA lan card and that will not work either. It will load the driver fine but will not start. Device manager says (code 10)whatever that means?
Maybe I'll be asking for a new HD with OS installed soon.

i have the same problem
i just got my computer yesterday and it messed up right from the start
i didnt order for win xp either

Try unbridging your LAN card(s) in the Open network connections.

That should solve the issue.

Please let me know if that helps

Hey they say that its for people that didnt have an os, well i did have on installed by them so that would not be the problem. Keep up with the updates so i can find out what im gonna have to do with my sager
post #20 of 46
i reinstalled my system but following their directions, i installed SP1 before installing the drivers.
its almost over a day now that i have installed the OS again and only once has the network controller complained which went away as soon as i restarted the system.
so
so far so good
but my fan still makes a fair bit of noise when they come on
