Dell X1 - Can it play games?

Hi everyone. My question is quite simple really ^_^ Can that little lappy play games at all?

Currently, I've got an Inspiron 8600, although I'm really finding it too bulky to be carrying around everywhere. And I'm really missing the portablility of my Vaio Picturebook (which is what I had before the Inspiron). So the X1 seems appealing because it's quite a bit smaller than the 8600, but should (in theory) still have a reasonable amount of power to it.

I'm not concerned about the office performance of it (Word, Excel, etc), since from what I've read that isn't an issue. But what about games? I'm one who does like to indulge in the odd MMORPG *laughs* Final Fantasy XI and Guild Wars are my two main games of choice at the moment. I've read that World of Warcraft does work for people, but how about others?

Anyway, think that covers it. Feel free to point out that it won't be as good as the Inspiron *laughs* I'm prepared for that.

Hmm, probably one last question then, if I _don't_ want to get a 15.4" style laptop (something smaller, not bigger, so I don't want the 17" ^_~), what would be my options for a Dell lappy that can play games?

Thanks in advance ^_^

I'm afraid the ULV P-M and integrated graphics do not make the X1 a gaming beast. It will struggle with a lot of new games, but it should manage them on low detail at least...

*nods* I'm well aware of the fact it won't be a gaming beast ^_^ Can't really expect that in such a small package I suppose.

Found some 3DMark05 scores for the X1 for those that are interested (and then proceeded to run it on my 8600 to compare):

3DMark Score: 182 (X1) 1136 (8600) ~16%
CPU Score: 1468 (X1) 2363 (8600) ~62%
GT1 - Return to Proxycon: 0.8fps (X1) 4.7fps (8600) ~17%
GT2 - Firefly Forest: 0.5fps (X1) 3.5fps (8600) ~14%
GT3 - Canyon Flight: 1.0fps (X1) 5.7fps (8600) ~18%
CPU Test 1: 0.9fps (X1) 1.2fps (8600) ~75%
CPU Test 2: 1.1fps (X1) 2.0fps (8600) ~55%

The percentages are what percentage the performance is of the X1 compared to the 8600.

So yes, not _that_ good ^_~ But I'd still be curious to hear from people who have used one for gaming to see firsthand how it performs.

Since the X1 has the GMA 900 graphics, it should at least beat the 700m in gaming performance, though the X1 has a slower processor. It should at least be able to run most modern games, though FPS would be quite low.

on a 2200 900 GMA graphics, you can run NFSU2 at all low, 640x480 and it still get heavy lags during races.

Specs: 1.6 ghz 725, 512 mb ram, 60 gb 5.4k

The X1 dosen't have a fan right? If it dosen't you might not want to do too much CPU intensive work on it on a long period of time

is the 700m that much bigger than the x1? The 700m has an onboard optical drive and it can play some games well. Sorry to post after you said the comment about inspirons, but the 700m is still an option.

If you like the sonys though you might want to look at those still as they rival apple (IMHO) on style, very sexy but expensive

The latitude D410 is another option. Supposedly, reviews say it gets good battery life, and its running full power dothans on the sonoma platform (so you're still getting the GMA900). Probably performs a bit better than the 700m and is a bit lighter too (but no optical drive).

I really wouldn't expect this machine to game well. Personally, I'm considering it because it is ultra compact and can be found at a decent price. I think its worth the money I'll save over powerful but small sony S or asus W3 for example, since it makes more sense to take that price difference a build a desktop for gaming. For the same total amount in the end, you'd get much better performance and upgradeability on the desktop (and then you'll still have a light laptop for work on the go).

I just read up on the differences between the various 915 chipsets, and it appears that the X1 is using the 915GMS, which has the GMA900 clocked much slower (about half on the regular 915GM). So I guess the performance would be much worse than say on a D410 and who knows maybe even the extreme 2 on the 700m. Hopefully, 2D (RTS and the like) games still run fine.

I read a review of the D410 somewhere that said they got it to run Far Cry on low detail not to badly,amazing...

ultraportable and gaming are two words that dont go together, the x1 has integrated graphics as I recall, Ive used the 8600 before and dont understand how you find that model to be tooo big but to each his own.
If gaming capability is what your looking for, an ultraportable model will not suit your needs.

Uhm this thread was almost 5 months old? The OP probably found his/her answer a long time ago.

Also, 15.4" would probably be too big for people who want to move around a lot (e.g. use in lectures). 12" computers are perfect for that, especially if you don't game.

Crap, I think that's what the TX uses...oh well, I never bought it for gaming.

Yes, I think I read the TX uses the 915GMS. I'm pretty sure all ultraportables do because the GMS chipset is smaller. That's ok though, it's good enough for 2D games. I can run an RTS like WC3 at max resolution/max details smoothly.

Is this a joke? I never knew gamers like to play games on small screens... but umm I believe your question has been answered somewhere in this thread already.

There has to be one everywhere ^^ eh?

He is not asking if this is a gaming laptop, he is asking if this laptop might be able to play a game. People buy computers for things other than gaming and all he wants to know is if it could entertain a little bit when time permits.

But I guess every computer ever sold anywhere in the universe either has to play games or its crap.............

Yeah, the 700m (or the 710m probably, just the 700m with a colour change) is a great little machine. I too was getting tired of my larger 8600, and bought the 710m 2 weeks ago and am extremely happy. Its nice and small, and can play games better than I thought. Hitman 2 at 800x600 with medium settings (haven't tried high yet) runs flawlessly!!!

I rarely ever play games, so the X1 works out well. Besides, just because a laptop has a 12" screen, it doesn't mean you can't attach a larger external monitor to it!
I want to get a 19" LCD for my 710m, but don't have the dollars atm.
No problem. You can always start saving for the 19" LCD from today!!! Though it may take some time but eventually you're gonna have it!!!
