Optical Mouse - which to use? Problem with Microsoft...

Thread Starter
Hello,

So, I tried using my Microsoft optical explorer on the XPS Gen2, and after installing the drivers, my cursor started to jump around every time I would type (this is not me brushing the touchpad accidentally).

Apparently,
I'm not the only one who has had this problem.

What mice have people tried that:

1. Are stable
2. Don't conflict with the Touchpad
3. Enable full use of the touchpad and mice both
4. Any other bells and whistles that might be relevant...

????????

Thanks!!!

I use the Logitech MX 3100 but that's a keyboard and mouse setup. The mouse in the MX 3100 is the Logitech MX 1000 Laser. You can see my setup at http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=95269.

It's awesome!

Yes, the MX1000 rules, I won't go back to my Explorer. Plus it's got Li Ion batteries.

Which mouse do you have again - the Intellimouse Explorer or the Intellimouse Optical?

Dumb question, but do you have the Intellipoint software installed, and if so, which version?

I use a mx518 and love it. i never thought the on the fly dpi changing would come in handy, but it does in BF2

Depends. My setup (see my above post) works AWESOME! It's a laser mouse as well which gives you much better sensitivity to movement. The charge can last a whole week for me but I always dock it at night just for the heck of it.

i used to use the wireless logitech mx700 and wireless keyboard and i loved it. After i bought my 518 i realized how heavy the mx700 was but up until then i never noticed it.

An earlier version of the Logitech 518, the 510, also works very well. I use it at home. When on the road I use the Logitech travel mouse. For a while I actually used two mice simultaneously: the 510 and the Logitech Marble mouse (making four ways to navigate!), but one can only configure the Logitech drivers for one mouse at a time, if run at the same time! The 510 and the Travel mouse are properly detected each time they are connected, but they are not used simultaneously (no reason for it: the 510 does everything the Travel Mouse does, but more - at the cost of size. The Marble Mouse has very different qualities!)

Was that for me? I have a few of both of them, but wired and wireless, but my current favorite is the MX1000. It's very smooth, has a cradle to recharge with, the software isn't buggy and it's got buttloads of buttons you can customize. I still like my explorer (wireless), but I'm not fond of the newest design (with the tilt wheel). It just doesn't have the same feel as the old one, but batteries last a Lot longer. and I have no clue which version of intellipoint I have, it's fairly new though, I think.. I occasionally have to reinstall it because it can't stay in startup for some unknown reason. That would probably be my biggest complaint. Oh, and you have to have it installed if you want to customize the buttons.

I use (as you can see in my sig) the Microsoft wireless optical *notebook* mouse. Compact - but not tiny - it works fine. Didn't even needed to install any additional drivers for the mouse. Just plugged in the mouse and after the "new hardware installed etc" it was good to go. YMMV however, since this is with my 9300 and not a XPS.

The range is small (less than 3 feet) but hey it's connected to the laptop - why would your mouse be farther than that?

The receiver fits under the mouse. Very portable. Pretty cool.

My notebook just arrived to day and im excited!! the Inspiron 9300. I purchased a Microsoft wireless notebook mouse non blue tooth for this machine and it works great. No problems whatsoever, very responsive. You plug this dongle think in a USB port and put a battery (one aa included with the mouse) into the mouse itself. It has great range, about ten feet I would say, I can sit with my laptop on the table and use the mouse on my leg or scroll through pages with the mouse in my hand pointed downward, I can scroll pages to my hearts desire. Soo far I am very impressed with this mouse. Again it is not blue tooth, a small module plugs into a usb port and WHAM!! Good to Go, Bluetooth screwtooth I say!! Im glad I didnt waste fifty bucks on a blue tooth card as my cel phone has USB connectivity. OH yeah, as soon as I plugged the mouse in, XP recognized it, supposedly installed necessary software? three seconds later my mouse was working, It couldnt get any easier!! 31.99 for the mouse at best buy on sale from 39.99. You'll not find a blue tooth mouse for that price!!

I really like my $30 MS Intellimouse Optical. It's very light and smooth, and tracking is excellent on almost any surface. I use this with my 9300. At home I have a Logitech MX510 that's really nice too, but it's not a noticeable improvement over the $20 cheaper MS.

I strongly dislike wireless mice because the batteries weigh them down a lot which increases friction, and thus increases hand stress.

I just bought the Microsoft laptop wireless optical mouse from CompUSA for the laptop I am ordering tomorrow. It is a pretty nice mouse (using it on laptop at work). CompUSA has it on sale for $35 and there is a $10 mail in rebate you can get until the 23rd for a nice total of $25. Well worth my $25.
