I just figured I'd send an update to this.. its been almost 2 months and 2 trips into the Sony San Diego Repair Facility I STILL don't have a 'non-beeping' laptop..
I called up shortly after posting the thread on here and got a trouble ticket opened for service, they sent me a box which took 2 weeks and a 2nd phone call to get.. (apparently the first one I requested never made it to me). I got the laptop back about 5 days after I sent it in - they changed the motherboard and keyboard. I powered it up and withing 2 minutes heard the beep again. Nothing was fixed. Interestingly enough, they didn't set it back to the original configuration - All along they told me to back everything up because they'd put a new image on it so aside from installing Firefox I didn't really use the laptop because of this... Well, I did some of my own troubleshooting and formatted the hard drive.. just to see if it was driver related or anything. (I can't figure out why they didn't do this...).. Anyway - it didn't help because after the new OS was installed it still beeped - but - the interesting part is when it was doing the install - anytime there was heavy hard drive activity the beeping stopped... I figure its got to have something to do with the hard drive..
Anyway - I called up again, explained my trouble shooting and got another box sent to me. (This time I got the box in 2 days but they didn't send the pre-paid label - I just paid for it myself instead of waiting for another one to be sent.) When I had someone on the phone I asked about hte possibility of replacing the unit with a new one, they said they don't send out NEW ones, if they can't fix mine I'd get a refurbished unit. That didn't go over too well with me - I didn't even have it a month, I paid full price for a brand new unit - If i wanted a refurbished one I could have saved a few $$$'s and gotten one, if they were replacing it I wanted something new - but they wouldnt budge. (I was speaking with a supervisor at this time who flat out told me that he couldnt escelate this call any higher than him because the people he reports do "don't deal with these issues, they are not concerned with day-to-day operations".)
Anyway, I reluctantly sent the laptop back in a second time... 12 days later I got it back, opened the box, read the work order. "No work done: All noises are normal". NOTHING WAS DONE. (And when I say nothing - i mean NOTHING - not even the reformat of the Hard drive.. the clean XP install I put on was still there.. thats insane - I did troubleshooting and at least gave thema head start to thinking it was the drive.. they could have at least TRIED replacing the hard drive!!!!)
I was livid. I powered it on and within 2 minutes.. Beep... Beep... How the _____ is that normal?? I called up - furious and got no response from anyone, all they offered to do was have me send it in - a THIRD time - even though they jsut told me it was normal. I posted on here, did searchs on various forums, even went into a Best Buy and stook there next to a T series on display for 20 minutes - THEY DON'T BEEP.. its not normal. If it was "normal" why did they bother replacing the motherboard the first time?? If its normal theres no need to change anything.. I asked to speak with a manager, got denied. They put me into some queue which went to a general voicemail box.. Called back, got put into some other managers voicemail box... Called a third time and spoke to a supervisor who - although wasn't much help from the rest - calmed me down and got me to send in the unit again. He said he would escelate this every way possible - he couldnt guarantee me a new replacement (if they coudlnt fix) but did seem to say the right things as far as being able to make this a priority...
I sent it on on Friday (I didn't wait for a box from them, I Fedexed it myself) and they should have it today. I put a little note inside the box asking for an update BEFORE they send it back to me...
I'm really stuck now because its been 2 months since I bought it so I can't send it back to where I got it (and its got a replaced MB so they might not take it anyway).. I already paid my credit card company so I'm not sure they can do anything to help.. (and if I do a stop payment it would hurt the vendor I got it from, not Sony)... I'm crossing my fingers they replace the thing (or fix mine). I really wish there was a good comparable model out there and I could buy something else but i really do like the T series - if it works..
For those of you that read through this 'novel' - thanks..
It got a bit longer than I expected but I needed to share my horrendous situation... Luckily I haven't seen too many threads like this about Sony support - I don't think overall they are as bad as I'm portraying (which does give me confidence they'll ultimately resolve the issue) ut at the same time they've really messed this up bad... 2 months of owning a laptop and they've had it more than I have.
