12" iBook with CD-ROM or COMBO drive?

Argh; I just re-read the terms and conditions for the free iPod mini 4GB or $225CDN off a higher iPod (for higher education purchasers) and it turns out that eMacs, Mac minis, and 12" iBooks with CD-ROM are excluded... wait a sec; 12" iBook with CD-ROM drive? I don't think they sell those anymore, cause it's a DVD/CD-RW COMBO drive that's sold with the 12" iBook. And on the "Student Union" promotion page, the "iBook from $1199" (CDN) is advertised as part of the promotion, and that would be the 12" iBook with Combo drive. Did they use to sell 12" iBooks with just a CD-ROM drive recently?

they probably are talking about the cd burner as the CD-ROM. I am guessing you need the superdrive (dvd burner) in order to get the free ipod mini.

The 899 iBook has only a CD-ROM. You have to get the 949 version. These are US dollars and educational prices.

OHHHhh... yeah, in Canada, we just get the COMBO drive 12" iBook (@ $1199 CDN) and up.

Thanks so much. Btw, I'm looking at the US Apple.com store (non-educational), and all I see is the COMBO 12" iBook version. Maybe only select stores offer the CD-ROM drive version? Where did you see it being offered?

Yah, but you see, there is no 12" superdrive version of the iBook that I can see which is available.

yeh, is goofy why they offer the cd-rom version thru the academic offerings. seems like a pretty worthless way to save $. they shouldn't even offer it imo.

I don't know why they bother either...but maybe they're doing it as a way to get rid of stock and offer education buyers a slightly better price.

Ok, good. Cause I've never seen that option on the Apple.ca / educational site, so I guess I don't have to worry about it.

correct, the canadian educational sites don't offer the CD-ROM iBooks, only the combo drive and superdrive models.
