Audio Popping When playing mp3's

I'm hearing a distinct popping or cracking noise when I play mp3's. Some are worse than others. I have a 5680s.

Maybe a driver issue? Something worse? Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks

Yah, need to provide as much background info as possible to help the rest of the forum help solve your problem.

Best to list:
1) machine model and set up,
2) os and other programs (and the versions thereof) involved,
3) versions of drivers that might be involved,
4) how long whatever it is has been happening,
5) what recent changes in any of the above, if any, have been made recently,
6) whatever else you can think of.

Interesting...

I've heard the same sound (presumably) when playing mp3s, but only through my new Sennheiser headphones. I had thought the problem was with the 'phones, and I returned the first pair. However, I just heard the same noise with the replacement pair. It doesn't happen all of the time, only occasionally (typically on louder tracks), but it's definitely noticeable and annoying.

I understand some of that popping is the hard drives switching on and off. If you do a search on "audio popping" you'll find some good information, though none of it seemed to directly address your problem.

On the 8890, there's a known issue where the IR port makes a weird beeping noise in the audio. I don't know about the layout of the 5680, but could that be the problem? Try going into device manager and deactivating the IR port. Also, as Marquis mentioned, the hard drives do create a low pitched rumble in audio. Perhaps that's the issue, and unfortunately, that one can't be solved.

Well, there was one post about Intel Device Accellerator. Apparently that seemed to help some. I've downloaded it but haven't installed it.

So far, I've been very lucky with none of the odd problems that have been mentioned. My microphones work, no funny pixels, no popping, no rumbles, no stripping or blurring or artifacting or anything. And that's been the case with a number of SAGERs. I have to figure my good luck is at someone else's expense so I try to help. But for the life of me, I have yet to figure out what Mic2 Select does other than turn off the regular mics. I can't find any reference anywhere to Mic2.

Oh well, one less thing to go funny.

On the 88XX there is one mixer in the volume controls that puts out tons of noize.
On mine its the AUX mixer.
Try muteing different mixers and see if the noize goes away.

update your audio drivers and see if that helps.
i would do that before any drastic troubleshooting.

It a really odd noise, almost a snap or crack sound, you know?

It seems to not even appear in alltracks, which is even stanger.

Outkast and Our Lady Peace, pops. Manheim Steamroller Christmas, no pops. I'll try the IR thing.

update

Turning off the IR port did not affect the problem, but...

I downloaded the latest drivers off of Sagernotebook.com, and the problem seems to be largely gone. *knock on wood*

Grooving, let's hope that solves it.

Still like to know what the problem was. I hate these kind of things. Gremlins! That's what it is, gremlins, menehune, leprechauns, meunchkin, all those little demons that make life miserable.

grr

Never mind - the problem is still there.

Just to be sure, I did check to make sure it was the 5680 and not the headphones, and it's definitely a problem with the laptop.
