Got my new Saaaager!

Heya guy/gals of the Sager Notebook forums...

I just got my hot (Cold? I live in Alaska) hands on my new 5680, and MAN this thing is a beauty! After my Inspiron 8200 suffered an untimely death due to Dell sending me a lemon (long story), a frantic search began for a replacement - I found it here in the Sager Forums. You guys are the greatest bunch of tech people, supporters/flamers, and honest folks I've seen on almost any message board. You seriously did help me choose to get this box.
These forums are an unbelievalbe wealth of knowledge, and I salute every one of you.

And! Even without dancing bananas, I have a 100% dead-pixel-free UXGA. I did have the chriping fan issue, but the firmware update Sager sent out did the trick perfectly - she's quiet as a baby. I am complely, utterly, and totally satisfied with what is most definately a very superior product. Any CPU/GPU temperature problems I'm pretty sure I've solved with a dab of my good friend, Arctic Silver 5. The fans hardly ever come on to a real degree - even when busting out the FPS in 1600x1200 Homeworld 2! Unbelievable!

In short, thank you guys and gals so much - especially Divine_Madcat, Henrik, and Adam&Laura over at PCTorque - is there ANYTHING you guys don't know about these things between you?

And finally, the system specs:

SAGER NP5680 (Ordered 10/17, shipped 10/27, at my house 10/30. Now THAT's some shipping!)

2.8GHz P4 HT
800MHz FSB
60GB 5400RPM hard disk
128MB ATi M10
15" Wide-angle viewing UXGA display
802.11b/g wireless
8xDVD / 24/10/24x CDRW combo optical drive
Windows XP Professional Corporate w/ Service Pack 1

Thank you again, everyone. I know that if I ever have any problems (that I can't solve by my lonesome), I'll know exactly where to turn.

Another VERY satisfied Sager owner,

U-da-man. Congrats! If you get time for a step-by-step on applying that Arctic Silver, I'd love to learn more about it. I've seen info on the 'Net for desktops, but I'd like to know how folks are going about it on their laptops. Thanks, and happy gaming!

I second MrMsyvc (damn you got a hard name to type) on a review of the Arctic Silver scenario. From what I have read about it, it could save a bit of fan turning.

Welcome aboard (or a board or a forum - oh don't mind me - I'm just bored right now).

One question I have about that Arctic Silver compound is how much did you need to do your CPU? I notice they sell a 2.7g tube of the stuff. And is it worth doing/possible to do the GPU?

Wow, didn't think that would be such a request. Yes, sure, I'll throw together a How-To for Arctic Silver in the next couple of days - complete with pictures! They'll be of a 5680, though perhaps not mine.

Arctic Silver is a very, very powerful thermal compound and you don't need hardly any of it. For an Intel P4 with the heat spreader, you need a blob about the size of half a pea smack in the middle of the spreader. Do not spread it around beforehand. Then just stick the heatsink back on - the pressure of the sink sitting flush will create an air-free medium between the CPU and the sink.

Oh yes. That half-pea sized blob is a very, very small fraction of even the smallest tube of AS5. You could easily do fifteen or twenty systems with the smallest tube before you worry about it. The best supplier I found was NewEgg.com - but then again, I have no local outlets for thermal grease. There is a fake "Arctic Silver" compound going around - make sure you get the real McCoy.

One thing about AS5 is that it is INCREDIBLY thick - almost like plumber's putty or tile caulk. Not only that, but it gets thicker the more you use it - apparently after full burn-in, AS5 will really stick. Basically the moral of that story is that you'll have a tough time getting the sink off after you Arctic Silver it up.

My fans never get loud, even when I'm blasting games full-strength. I'm going to a LAN party later today for some high-end UT2K3 LANning, so we'll see how the fans get then. But for normal everyday sitting-on-your desk use...I seem to have significantly less fan-turning than many other forum goers.

Cheers,

- Aeon

Thanks for the info Aeon, particularly the bit about it getting sticky after time. I am wondering about a CPU upgrade 12 months down the track but considering how good this stuff is, I may just do it anyway.

For any Australian's after a local source of Arctic Silver 5 go here. They are based over in Perth, Western Australia.

Aeon, did you just do your CPU or did you also try your GPU?

congrats dude

how long did it take for the laptop to reach from the day you ordered it?
the reason i ask is i am waiting for mine too

I want to try the GPU, but I can't seem to find the service manual for this on Clevo's site so that I can get to it. As soon as I do, I'm going to AS that one up and try overclocking by about 5-10%.

As for how long it took, to get here - it was a total of three days. I ordered it on 10/17, it was shipped 10/27, and showed up at my door late afternoon on 10/30.

heres the link to the servicemanual for the 5680

EDIT: just looked at the service manual... the gpu is under the keyboard on the 8890 so i figured same for 5680.. but from pix.. looks like gpu is on bottom on 5680...

I notice Clevo still has not put up the service manual for the 8890 (D800P). It should be here but all we get is an empty directory .

Hurry up Clevo, I want my service manual.

Not to complain, but I sort of wished you had waited a tiny bit to install Henrik's thermal measurment program and taken some readings before the AS5 and then after the AS5. Then we'd have the start of some hard performance data. With, without, doing this, doing that. The more information the better. Its the only way to really analyze and compare various products and procedures. It would have been especially nice because your machine was a virgin, ie - no dust or dirt or lint or bunnies or whatever else can get in there. At least we would hope not.

You said you might do another machine, if so, maybe you can install the temp measurement program on that and take some before and after readings.

In any case, congrats again on getting the machine, congrats on doing the AS5 and, ah heck, whatever else you can think of. I remember, no defective pixels!!!

Have you looked into Shin-Etsu? They make excellent thermal pastes that outperform Arctic Silver (according to reviews). I haven't personally used it (actually, I still have my stock thermal pad on my proc), but you can read a review of it compared to other thermal compounds here. There was a huge uproar on the [H]ardOCP forums when people got their hands on it. I'd link the thread, but it seems that the [H]ardOCP forum search is messed up. Anyway it's supposed to be a bizatch to put on, and initial results don't show much because you have to give it time to cure. I'll be getting a tube one of these days... (I think I've said that for several months). But then we don't sell Shin Etsu products at Best Buy, and we do carry Arctic Silver...

Hey there! Im glad i could be of service.

Even better, i am glad that you got the beautiful screen you were hoping for. Nice to see everything work out well.

Of course, you are in the perfect place for these laptops; with the naturally cold enviroment, you would have to use teh fans nearly as much. Bling bling!

Anyway, if you ever need help in the future, we are all here for ya!

that was interesting reading falcon9x, I'm looking forward to see some before-and-after results posted in this forum.

Yet another review of thermal paste compounds. It does give the thumbs up to the Shin-Etsu G751 for best performance in what would be the setup in our laptops.

Thanks for pointing the Shin-Etsu product out falcon9x .
