Got the M40.....now what??

Thread Starter
I never intended to buy a laptop this weekend....i promise!!

But a big department store in town (Myer in Adelaide, Australia) were having a sale and I ended buying a satellite M40. Very happy I did....excellent machine at a great price.

Now the question is: What needs to be done?

What "essential" programs do I need to get?
What other utilities should I get?
Are there any drivers I need to get to make this thing work better?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help.

well you made a good choice...

now i would say essential programs are

3dmark 2005 for benchmarking
nero 6 ulta for dvd burning
dvdshrink for dvd backing up
avast antivirus
spybot search and destroy (keep your computer clean)
firefox (because internet explorer sucks)
bitcomet (for those torrent downloads)
winrar (for those .RAR compressed file you will come across)
winzip (for those pesky .zip files)
powerdvd (for watching movies)

and last but not least the latest updates and drivers...

those are the essential programs that i use and i have no trouble with them, hope it helps.

What updates and drivers are needed?

77.72 drivers from laptopvideo2go should be a good start. and after that i would suggest just letting windows do its thing and update itself as needed. turn on automatic update and let it do its work.

Blue & Red Dead Pixel

Hi All

1st time posting here.
After having the M40 for about 2 months, 2 dead pixel pop out.
Wonder if I can RMA my laptop.
I don't think you can RMA it for two dead or stuck pixels, that's the bad news.
The good news is that I had one very annoying red pixel, and thought I was stuck with it. I did a little research, found that if you rub the stuck pixel, it can unstick itself. I tried this using a sunglasses cleaning cloth. I had to rub the affected area fairly firmly, but it did work. This happened about two months ago, and I haven't seen any other bad pixles yet.

Ok will try later see whether can rub it off.

yeah... you cant rma for 2 pixels but the rubbing method can work (doesnt always but hey it is worth a shot).

why would you have both winrar and winzip? winrar can open tons of files (including zip rar and many more) just stick with that program

but yes winrar is a must have

as for other items on your list... i prefer azureus for bittorrent and kaspersky for antivirus and sygate for firewall
post #11 of 11
okay... that makes not much real difference, but the reason i go for avast for antivirus work is that it is both free and easy to use, as well as bitcomet is the same. winrar does indeed open all those types of file i just personally prefer to use winzip for it... he was asking for opinions and well that is mine.
