Free Graphics (Photo Editing) Software - Which one?

Hello,

I just recently bought a Toshiba laptop (Windows XP Home O.S.) for my aunt and want to install software on it. I am looking for a free graphics/photo editing program that has many of the features that can be found on Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance,

The Gimp... Somehow I just can't bring it to myself to install this program on my aunt's computer with a name like that...

Any other suggestions?

The Gimp stands for "The GNU Image Manipulation Program" and is an excellent piece of free photo editing software.

Nothing is going to beat The Gimp in terms of functionality for the price you pay.

Although i will agree the gimp one of the best image editing software ever (way better the pay for play, macromedia fireworks). If the name is going to kill the ms beta spoken about is call Acrylic.

All mentioned (The Gimp, Picassa, and Acrylic) are all viable solutions. I would give edge to The Gimp as it is the most robust of the choices.

Another very basic editor would be Paint.NET.

If you are willing to pay a little bit, look on eBay for Micrografx Picture Publisher version 8 or newer. You should be able to get it for under 50 bucks. It's got some very sophisticated tools that rival Photoshop's.

Otherwise, the Gimp is easily the best editor for its price.

At that price point, I would think Paint Shop Pro would be a much better choice.

Will Acrylic be available for free once it's released?

I believe I've read somewhere it would be, but, it would probably be released w/ a time limited license like MSAS.

At least some form of Anti-Spyware (if not the entire application) will remain free according to the Micosoft representatives I spoke to at the last TechNet and Partner talks.

Heh, "gimp" is also used in online gaming as either a verb, meaning to mess up your character, or as a noun, meaning a character that is messed up, or a player that is less than capable.
