How does this DARN IEEE 1394 port work?

Thread Starter
Anyone figured out the trick on getting the IEEE 1394 port on the XPS Gen 2 to work? I have tried two different digital video cameras with no luck. The computer does not recognize them. My bud tried the same camera and the same cable on his desktop and BAM, it automatically recognized it. The kicker in this whole thing is that when I tried a PCMCIA cared with the six pin firewire ports, the lappy immediately recognized the camera. The IEEE 1394 connection on my lappy shows up under network connections, is that normal?

If anyone has any way of solving this problem, it would be greatly appreciated. I am currently on hold with DELL's award winning customer support and have been for the last 45 minutes or so, with no answer in sight.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, I'm a little confused--anyone know what's so special about the fact that our 9300/XPS2's firewire ports are 4-pin "unpowered"? I read some comments about it that sounded like "oh that's too bad! Mine is the standard 6-pin powered".

Get a powered firewire hub. The 4 pin firewire port onlys provide about 500ma (If i remember correctly). Using a powered hub will fix the problem.

I just plugged in my video camera for the first time today. The computer didn't see it. Both have 4 pin firewire ports (unpowered). My problem turned out to be that the cable was not all the way in on the computer (duh).

Hmmm. I guess I'm not clear on just what a powered firewire port does for you versus an unpowered one, then.

I have an external drive with 6 pin firewire ports. The two extra pins supply power to the drive. You don't need a power cord. Devices with 4 pin firewire ports have their own power supplies which require a power cord.

Ah thanks, Masic.
