5400 rpm or 7200 rpm?

I'm wondering what the difference in performance would be between a 60gb/7200 rpm hard drive and a 100gb/5400 drive on the z70 refresh. Any thoughts or comparisons? Thanks

5400 is very good. 7200 is faster, but most wont know the difference. The 7200 may be a little warmer and may suck up more battery life. If the price of the 60gb is the same as the 100/5400, I'd get the bigger. What's more important to you? Storage space or speed?

I'm leaning more towards speed; 60 gb should be enough for me, but if the speed difference between the 5400 and 7200 is negligible, I'd go with the 100gb just to have some insurance space.

When and where would you see the speed difference? Regular activities?

Not really, sometimes in games, some heavy processing like DVD copying or large photoshop files. The average user may not even notice the difference, especially when they're just emailing and cruising the internet- you wont see a difference there.

Access time varies on all HDs, doesn't matter the RPM. You can get a 8.5 ms on a 5400 and a 7200, even on a slower one. These HD's are rated 7200 RPMs at their max processing. Just like CD burning, it may not start off at the max, but in a little bit it will hit its max speed. That's why I gave that example on processing a large Photoshop file. It may take a 5400 HD a little bit longer to process than a 7200 HD. May not even be that much longer, but the 7200 should be faster (whether it's only a couple fractions of a second or up to a whole minute). If I was in your position, I'd go with the much need extra space. Now a days, people download like crazy- extra speed that I may or may not notice is not worth giving up an extra 40gb's of valuable space. That's just my opinion.

The density of data on the platter will also affect how "fast" the drive is. The 100GB drive will have a greater density than the 60GB drive.

I went for more space and 5400 rpm. I really have no need for a 7200 rpm IMO, but i will love to have more space and have it run cooler and longer on battery

I have a 5400 RPM drive, so I'm not an expert on this, but I've read on the forums that drive speed doesn't make that much (if any) of a noticeable difference in battery life.

I'm going to go with the 60gb 7200 rpm drive in my Z70V refresh. I will definately need more storage so I ordered a bytecc external USB 2.0 enclosure and a Seagate 160gb ATA100 drive all from newegg.com. I figure that I will install all programs and games onto the 60gb internal drive, and store all big things onto the external drive (movies, music, etc.)

ps. using an external enclosure and putting your own hdd into it is a much better idea than buying a pre-built one because the pre-builts do not have as good of a warranty as the regular hdd's you can buy ... (the seagate I bought has a 3 year and shock protection).

pps. I've also read in quite a few places that the 7200 rpm drive does not consume a noticably greater amount of batter vs. the 5400 rpm drive. I'm not sure about heat though.
