Is warranty really necessary?

I found a good deal on this laptop but its got only a 90 day warranty. Do you guys think having a 3 year warranty is really necessary? Have any of you had a major problem with any parts? I'm sorta worried cause things can easily go wrong with especially the laptop overheating all the time. I'm a hardcore gamer that goes like 5 hours of BF2 a night but I don't overclock anything. Please give me some insight thanks!

There is always a chance that something will break, maybe within 90 days, maybe within 1 year, maybe not for 20 years. An extended warranty is simply a form of insurance; by getting one, you are betting money now that more repairs will be needed later. If you buy the 3-year and never have a problem, you've wasted money. If you stick with 90-days, you could lose out to lots of repair bills. It's like notebook gambling, so it's really up to you what you feel comfortable with.

I take it you are looking to purchase this from an individual? If you get the warranty transferred to you, I believe that you can call Dell and buy the extra warranty after the fact, as long as it's before the 90 days expires.

Get a 3 years warranty, it's a must with Dell, at the high number of part returns they have...

Not for me. My warranty is voided with all the mods I have done. I however, feel pretty confortable that is I have a hardware issue that I can resolve it myself. I wouldnt trust anyone else with my computer anyways...

If your screen breaks, are you going to pay for it?
Or simply call Dell to send you one for free and replace it yourself then ship the broken one back...
I don't trust also people with my laptop. You know how are technicians, they don't care because it's not their machine.

4 years and complete care 400.00 pennies on the dollar per day if you break it or have a accident

If you're comfortable diagnosing and fixing problems yourself, the extended warranty isn't worth it. If you don't plan on having the laptop for years, the warranty isn't worth it. I get a new laptop every year so the warranty isn't worthwhile to me. The extended warranty will make the laptop more valuable when I sell it but not $400 more valuable. I'm also comfortable fixing problems myself.

Basically I see it like this: If you pay up to 1200 or so for a new notebook you will probably want another new one in a year or so anyway so why get anything extra.
However if you are paying 2500-3000 then yes definatally get the extra 2nd and or 3rd year warranty.

I figure 1-yr warranty is a MUST, 90 days seemed so short and 2-3 yr ones seem so long

Call Dell up and ask for it. Also, I don't know about your case, but just after I got my 9300, I received a letter from Dell offering me an upsize on my 1 year with a discount...maybe you'll get one/already got it?
