Windows Restore Disks vs. relying on your own backup

Thread Starter
I just bought a Sony laptop (used) off E-Bay. It didn't come with Windows Restore Disks. Nothing in the listing indicated they would be included nor did I expect any. I am used to having an Installation Disk for each PC (since I build my own desktop PCs).

I can buy the Windows Restore Disks for my laptop through the internet for as low as $35.00. Another alternative is I could simply backup my entire drive for the cost of maybe a dozen recordable CDs (I have a CD-R drive on my laptop).

Would it be better to pay the $35 and get the Windows Restore Disks or should I rely on my own system backups?

I would appreciate any advice on this.

Thanks.

the software that comes with your laptop to do this does a check to ensure all is well, so if your check is error free then there is no difference, unless you are worried that someone may have tampered with the recovery partition

Why dont' you just do a clean install of Windows? And then install all the up to date drivers from their website? Doing that, it would totally be more current than any of their Recovery Disks.
