external HD help

Hi all. I bought a WD 250 GB HD and a Kingwin USB 2.0/Firewire external enclosure. I can't get it to work. What jumper setting does the HD need to be on? When I plug it into the comp through either USB or firewire the drives do not show up. However, the comp is somewhat noticing it since it appears in safely remove hardware....Help!

it recognizes it? then everything is fine. you just have to format it now.

CS or Master is generally the seeting but it depends on the chipset of the controller. Check the documentation. it may not be seeing the drive it may just be seeing the controller. the drive may not be formatted either.

how would I format the drive if I don't get a drive letter assigned? It shows up as USB device when you try to remove, but there is no way to access it it seems.

If using an external enclosure, you need to set the HD as a master. There should be a simple schematic on the HD case showing you how to place the jumper/pin to configure as master. I THINK, WD drives come pre-configured as slave, but I'm not entirely sure.... Just use a small pair of needle nose pliers or something to pull off the pin & insert as needed to make it a master.

if your windows recognizes it (wiht add remove) then its not a jumper issue... if it was a jumper issue it wouldnt find anythign at all

i bet you just have to tell windows to use the drive... first you have to assign it a drive letter

to utilize new harddrives:

goto start > control panel > administrative tools > computer management

then click on the plus sign next to Storage then click "Disk Management"

You should be able to see the new disk here... right click on it and click somethign like make partition active ... i forget exactly what it is but this is where you set it all up

post if this works/doesnt work

I'v red somwher on the net that not all mobile racks ar compatible with every HDD. The ack you have might go for HDD max 80 or 100 GB. Try search the net for some more info.

Right click My Computer then Manage then Disk Management you will see it on the right pane as Unformatted or Un Alocated, you can then right click and create partition and/or then format.
Hope that helps ya out.

I just had the same situation with a Seagate 100gb. It didn't show up as a drive but it was seen in Everest as mass storage but no drive letter assigned. I also have a 40gb Hitachi which shows up as E when placed in the same enclosure.

I wanted to image the drive and Acronis picked it up so that worked out but I would like to have formatted the drive prior to imaging. I'll be interested to know if any of this works for the OP.
