?? about the assembly of the Z70V

I was first thinking about buying the Z71V but looks like I've changed my mind to the Z70V. At rjtech's website, it shows the difficulty of assembly for the Z71V as "Easy" and the assembly of the Z70V as "Hard". This will be my first barebones laptop, but I've built PC's before. Will I have any problems and will I need any special tools?

You shouldn't have a problem. It's fairly simple- All you need is a screw driver.

Ok, thanks. I wasn't sure if these barebones had the hex screws or special "star" screws. I wouldn't think they did but ya never know.

Just a phillips head. And a static band wouldnt hurt.

If i could find a barebone that is 700ish, I am going on the Z70V refresh. Transfer my stuff over man ahahha

I don't think you'll be able to find a refresh at the low $700's. The current one doesn't even go for that much. Maybe in the $770's for the current, but the refresh would probably go way over $800's and into the $900's (just a guess).

I'm curious if they (z71v & z70va) both use the same optical drive?

Hmm, the Z71V has a better vid card than the Z70V, so why is the 70 more expensive??? Everything else seems pretty comparable.

Its kinda lighter, its partly made of carbon fibre and 'kinda' has a better screen

The video cards are about equal... however the x700 scores a 2460 on 3dmark05 instead of the 1806 on my go6600. The 70V also comes with internal blue tooth and has a better video card. The over all build is also higher quality. Little things like the mouse buttons are improved.

I sure wish there weren't so many complaints about the Z71V screen. It sounds like what I REALLY want, but I don't want to take any chances on the screen. That's the main reason I'm switching to the Z70V.

That's was my reason also. well, I also liked the overall design of the Z70V better.

for the majority of customers that I've heard about via these forums, including my own experience and statements by at least 3 resellers (IST, Geared2Play, & ProPortable), issues with the screen of the Z71v have been blown way out of proportion. Yes, it's not perfect. Yes, there are "sparkles". But no, you probably won't notice them after a week of use unless you're looking for them, and other than that, the screen's great.

According to the resellers, who have seen them side by side, the screen on the Z70v is better, so you made a good decision. However the Z71v screen isn't half bad either. Just my 2 cents worth.

Thanks for all the input and comments. I'm sure I'll be satisfied. I mean, I have had a Toshiba Satellite for the past 4 years!

On the chart from ISTNC it does not list any other specs about the laptop... so you cant make a fair comparision with your z71v.

I said 'kinda' and I emphasized that it's better to some, but not to others..

And I've seen both in person, looks exactly the same to me...

In conclusion, you can't lose with either models

Aarghh! One more question: which, in your opinion, has more "lasting" power? I mean, the way technology is now, which one will be "out of date" sooner, the Z70V or Z71V? I keep reading the Z71V will outlast the Z70V as far as games cause of the video card.
wait for the Z70 refresh, and they're pretty much even. The Z71v supports SATA, but that's not a huge factor in which one will be out of date sooner.

I didn't really want to wait for the refresh, that's why I'm deciding between the Z71V and the current Z70V. I really like the looks of the 70 but I like the video card of the 71.

If you can't wait, just get it now. My current Z70V is spectacular. Well it's ok (I dont want to hype it too much). I'm sure there'll be delays on the refresh also. I HIGHLY doubt anyone would get it at the end of this month.
