Replacing HD in the A600-A690

Does anyone have a link or know how to change the hard drive on an A600 series laptop? I have a hitatchi 7k60 laying around, and would like to see if there is a performance gain switching to it from the 5k100 in it now.

Also, the 5k100 is a SATA drive and the 7k60 is a PATA drive, can I even do this swap?

Thanks for any advice.

I don't know about the SATA/PATA issue, but swapping out the hard drive is a bitch on the A series. I took mione down to CompUSA and got them to do it for $35 on my A270.

Well thats not what I was hoping to hear Is it under the keyboard, or do you have to dissamble the whole thing? Might just stay with the 5k100, not sure the performance would be much better with the 7k60, but its a hell of a drive.

Anyone else?

And thanks for the reply Steve!!

Well, either my google skills are lacking or there is just no information on how to remove the hard drive from the A series laptops... I'm willing to do a photo tutorial on the subject fully documented with pics, but I do need some help.

Does anyone have any idea how to get to the hard drive in this thing? I hate to pay compusa to do it for 2 reasons. The information still won't be available for all of us, and I'm not sure I can/want to use the drive in the future, I want to do some direct testing of the 7k60 vs the 5k100.

Can anyone help?

There was a photo step by step on a German forum which was linked to in posts here. You could try searching here or at www.notebookreview.com for it. It did involve dismantling the whole thing.

Found it! Thanks! and boy is it UGLY doing this! I think I'll live with the 100GB drive it came with after seeing this. This laptop is so tight, doing all that may weaken its structure or I'd miss a screw or crimp a cable. Yikes, too bad it don't just slide out!

Here it is for everyones reference, anyone translate to english?

Ok, so lets say I'm brave enough to do this.... Can you put a PATA drive in the A600 series? I know the one it comes with is SATA, but does it autoconfig or something, or will I fry my laptop or PATA HD?

I have a few lappys laying around with 7200 rpm drives and the new A600 I have now has a 5400 rpm SATA drive....
I dont see any speed increase with the 7200 rpm drives..... So why go to all the trouble ?????
I think you might be "spinning your wheels" (no pun intended)

Yes, that is the bigger question. The benches I've seen give a pretty small difference, and I'd much rather have a 100Gb drive than a 60Gb.
