Just if others feel like critiquing the setup I ordered it's listed below. I'm planning to use this for programming work, CAD stuff, and a little bit of gaming. I will be dual-booting linux and windows.
i9300:
1.6 Ghz Pentium M (Thinking about selling this chip and getting the 400FSB then pinmodding it)
256MB Ram (I'll upgrade this later on my own)
WUXGA TL Screen (I can't live with low resolutions!)
Geforce 6800 Go (For gaming/OpenGL programming)
24x CDRW/DVDROM (I don't burn DVDs)
60gig 7200RPM HD - THIS IS WHAT I'M WORRIED ABOUT NOW

Total Cost (w/Tax): ~1300

What kind of deals are you guys getting? Please help since I haven't bought a computer in 5 years!

Jacmert, I would add that if you are having viewing angle troubles, the samsung screens definitely have better viewing angles, you are within your exchange time and can request the samsung panel be sent to you or u can send the whole lappy back for exchange

Hey Cutters, did you actually get the HD model # mentioned in the article (Toshiba MK1032GAX) ? If so, I'll change my order around. Otherwise, I'll stay with my 7200 if they're using the older toshibas, which has much worse performance than the 7k60g or whatever.

Oh, ok... the Samsung's are supposed to have better viewing angles, eh?

Btw, I'm a Dell Canada customer, so any exchanges/refunds that we do are subject to a 15% restocking fee

Yes Jacmert, there are some pictures I think in the Dell pictures section of an LG and a Samsung panel side by side, clearly from the pics the viewing angles are better with the samsungs as many report. All in all , if you are happy with your LG then stick with it, some like samsung, some like LG, some hate samsung, some hate LG, the perpetual problem with samsung vs lg is that hardly anyone who has an opinion on the subject bothers to mention WHICH MODEL samsung or lg they got in the first place making most opinions useless when trying to figure out what to do, stay with what you have or risk an exchange. Also some people are just a bit obsessed on the topic, probably all of us LOL.

I asked this in an XPS2 thread but reading all these 9300 reviews convinced me to get a 9300 instead and save myself some cash. Anyway, does the fan come on loud when you turn the machine on and then quiet down after a few seconds? Also, if/when the fan does come one, is it real loud? I need a laptop that I can bring into a classroom and not have to worry about it creating a ruckus while the professor is talking...

SAVE CASH! Yah!

I don't notice that. I think I DO notice how ppl have said that the i9300 and XPS2 fans never shut off, though. They aren't that loud, but if you're in a silent room, you can probably notice that they're on. Anyways, it's quite quiet, whether you're idling or playing a game. The i9300 only has 1 fan, anyways, and it's pretty quiet even when you're going full bore.

Lol, wait a second... I think I found whether the 2nd fan is Front left side, instead of front right side. It's blowing much cooler air, though, and at a lower rate, too.

the 9300 has two fans
Yeah, lol. I didn't figure that out until yesterday when I wrote that. The front left fan is definately a smaller one, though. And it's really cool right now. Maybe it's for the GPU. Or HD.

The air it's blowing out right now is VERY cool. My front right (CPU?) fan is blowing out warm air.

Here's a great shortcut to some awesome color profile settings for the Samsung screens, really noticed a difference in the colors, they are in fact alot punchier and now look as good or better than LG at the settings listed in the thread.
All you samsung panel owners check it out, there's also a link somewhere for those of you who have LG panels to get color profiles that work good for LG's
ENJOY

Very helpful review, Cutters. Thanks!

I've never had a laptop before, and I've decided to go with the 9300. The only thing I'm stuck on is whether to pay for the accidental protection plan for damage from drops, spills, etc. It's $119 (but really less when the various current coupons are applied). I guess the system is toast if the LCD cracks or breaks, and I've got kids and large nosey cats in the house that this laptop will have to withstand.

Can this lappy really survive a drop from desk height while open? (I figure that's the worst case scenario.) I'd be grateful to hear from some folks!

I certainly wouldnt try dropping my laptop to see how well it will hold up, just take that reviews word for it.
if you are still reading peoples questions from reviews can u tell me if the keyboard is loud while typing?
Can you specify what screen you want (LG or Samsung), or do you you have to take what Dell sends you?

there are five different keyboard suppliers, keyboards will vary in how loud or quiet they are, quality of build too as they use different methods to support the keys underneath.

You cannot request a samsung or Lg screen so dell says, im sure it would not hurt to try though.
