Hey guys and gals my name is julie and I have been browsing this forum for quite some time and have learned a lot from everyone. I did not think of posting until i ran into a problem recently with my IBM Thinkpad A31. I tried to turn it on the other day after a few days of not using it and the laptop seemed to be powering on BUT the LCD screen did not come on. I then tried to turn on that little light on top of the lcd screen using the function key and even that was not working. I then proceeded to connect and external monitor and try that. I used the function key again to switch to the external monitor and i got nothing. could any of you kind gentlemen or ladies please shed some light on my little situation? Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Laptops turning on with no screen display is sometimes a motherboard problem. This problem just surfaced, correct? How old is the laptop? Any warranty? Another post above I recommeded sending it in as I do with this one. Unless you know your way around LCD's interior's it's better to send it in. Mabye try taking the keyboard apart, look in and see for any loose wires or connectors. But with your external monitor not working as well, Im favoring the motherboard problem.

The laptop was a refurb and about a year old. It was working on a Tuesday and then that night there was a major storm and the next day is when the problems started to occur. Should I call IBM?

Thinkpad

i recommend what JujitsuFreak said but if you could remove the hard drive ,memory , and cdrom out of the system and see if it makes a difference.
